did anyone else hear that there is going to be a quality aquarium built in stl? kinda like shedds but better?

i think it is going in that are across from the new baseball stadium.

i am completely wrong or did anyone else hear this?

There have been rumors about it for a while now, but I have never heard anything concrete.

From what I have been able to discern, and that ain't much, tere are basically two committed residents for the proposed Ballpark Village. And the aquarium is one of the two.

I cannot find anything about owner or operator of the place... nothing at all. Keeping all of that sort of quiet I think, and judging from the amount of work I have seen going on, it looks like it will not be completed any time soon.

The last time this was discussed, there were some problems because the financiers didn't want that idiot Sonneschein involved. However, I think that this is an entirely new deal. (I don't know if Sonneschein was replaced or the financiers were).

For those that don't remember Sonneschein, he claimed that you could salinity shock corals into faster growth. (Ummm, can anyone say Osmoconformer as opposed to Osmoregulator?) :D

By exposing embryonic coral cells to concentrated salt water, researchers at St. Louis' World Aquarium have been able to accelerate coral's growth, which is notoriously sluggish. "With this rate of growth, we think coral reef growth can be dramatically altered across the planet," said Leonard Sonnenschein, president of and a researcher at the World Aquarium. He first successfully applied this technique to clams, clown fish and shrimp.

That guy is a whack job and chased away all the big name public aquarium financial philanthropist.

There were some big names tied to it originally.

Philippe Cousteau, president of the environmental advocacy group EarthEcho International, said growing coral in captivity is "very cutting-edge stuff . . . there are only a few people doing it."

Please tell me this was taken out of context or a misprint. How can he think this???

The whole article was a lie.
Flat out - point blank, the guy is out of his mind.

I know the whole story.

He fabricated the results after killing countless coral frags and the "project" for the college students was over. The perfect end to a waste of time and life.

I cringe when I read that atricle, there is not one part that is not offensive to me.

Sonnenschein pointed out a natural experiment that parallels his work, indicating that he may be on the right track. The Great Salt Lake in Utah, once part of a primeval ocean and now marooned inland, evaporates a little every year. As this happens, it grows saltier and saltier.

Yet brine shrimp, for instance, "not only survive, they thrive" in this hypersaline environment, he said.

THAT IS WHY THEY CALL THEM BRINE SHRIMP YOU IDIOT.
Hmmm... Wonder why there are no fish, reptiles, or amphibians in the great salt lake ??
Just birds, flies, and pods !!

That guy will live on immortally in my mind as the biggest cheese bag, ever.

I didn't want to get into this because the thread can possibly go off-course easily. However, here's the deal. There's two Philippe's. The Philippe you remember from the TV series is dead. This is a different Philippe. There's a Cousteau Society Philippe and there is an EarthEcho International Philippe. In spite of all that Jacques did, his first family and his second family have been been fighting "Jerry Springer" type arguments for years in the courts. (If you want details, Google is your friend).

I can't speak for Philippe. Maybe he's an idiot, maybe he's trading his surname in for money for anyone who will provide it, or maybe a reason I've not mentioned.

Sonnenschein is the bozo.

Jean-Michel Cousteau was chased away from donating money because he realized that Sonnenschein is a joke.

the only cousteau i know of is jacque cousteau

sad that the are associated with STL

Well, neither of them are associated anymore the last I heard but I'm hoping one of them still is. (The only person I don't want involved is Sonnenschein). You can have Jean-Michel involved or you can have Philippe involved, BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE BOTH!!! (Sonnenschein should have known that). Jean-Michel is Philippe's uncle. Jean-Michel is most famous from the old TV show and more recently regarding Keiko (Free Willy).

Unfortunately, while Jacques was a great man, he was also an idiot. When you have a first family with children and grandchildren and then you have a second family later in life and have children and granchildren, you better have a good Will and Testament or Revocable Living Trust. Jacques didn't apparently care about estate planning so we ended up with the current situation. Nephews suing uncles, step-brothers suing step-brothers, step-mothers suing step-sons, et al. Because of all of the lawsuits, The old Cousteau Society is now splintered into http://www.cousteau.org/en/ and http://www.earthecho.org/home.html and http://oceanfutures.com/

This is depressing me. I'm going to find my old John Denver album and listen to Calypso. :D

For you young whipper-snappers who have no clue what Calypso is, it was the name of Jacques' research vessel. Here are the lyrics John Denver wrote in it's honor.

To sail on a dream on a crystal clear ocean
To ride on the crest of a wild raging storm
To work in the service of life and the living
In search of the answers to questions unknown
To be part of the movement and part of the growing
Part of beginning to understand

Aye, calypso, the places youve been to
The things that youve shown us
The stories you tell
Aye, calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you
So long and so well

Like the dolphin who guides you
You bring us beside you
To light up the darkness and show us the way
For though we are strangers in your silent world
To live on the land we must learn from the sea
To be true as the tide
And free as the wind-swell
Joyful and loving in letting it be

Aye, calypso, the places youve been to
The things that youve shown us
The stories you tell
Aye, calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you
So long and so well

Aye, calypso, the places youve been to
The things that youve shown us
The stories you tell
Aye, calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you
So long and so well
