STN, RTN causes/cures!!!

Those heaters can contain all sorts of things, iron is only one, copper, from copper wire is another, solder is a mix of Lead and tin ect,...

I would get a polly pad and do some water changes, this could still be the base of your problem.

the Vibrio cultured by Bingman has been found on most healthy corals IIRC...

I'm not saying bacteria couldn't be the case in a small number of instances. It's just not the cause of RTN - or even the most common IMO - for reasons mentioned previously.

I have no idea what causes STN/RTN at times. Sometimes it seems pretty apparent from a big temp or alk swing, other times it seems that no parameters have changed and yet a few pieces will show STN/RTN????

From my experience
In my old DSB 65gal with few fish, light feeding, the survival rate was awesome, but the colors were somewhat faded (still nice though)

In my current BB 120 it seems to be crap shoot what will live even though the colors are very rich and deep. I keep a lot of fish and feed once per day lately. I also have a much bigger skimmer.

Both tanks have had about the same water parameters no3 undectable and po4 .02-.04 on a Hanna meter. Alk10dkh, Cal 420, Mag 1280 etc....

I see lots of guys having success with BB tanks, I'm not one of them. I've gone as far as changing every piece of equipment in my tank just in case of a malfunction, to no avail. If you guys have any suggestions that would be great because my last resort is to break down this tank and start from scratch :(

Jackson,

I think you are running the Alk a little high for a BB. I had great results with my DSB tank at 9.4-10 but found in a BB it worked better at 8.0-8.6

How is your pH running?

I did dip the hammer, and today I see that its not a happy camper still... cant tell if its helped or not... but I did noticed when I dipped it it did have brown jelly...

errr... Ive ordered a bucket of Reef Crystals and it should be here tomorow... so I will be doing a good 30 gallon WC

It sounds to me from that article that the vibrio is on the coral all the time, but when the coral stresses out very badly, the vibrio starts predating it. Their antibacterial treatment just gives you a little bit of time.

Theyre not saying that the vibrio causes the RTN, its just the mechanism by which it happens.

But Rich, he was. At least that was his intention.

From the Bingman article:

"...showing that it causes disease in corals by placing clean corals in contact with the organism"

to me, disease = RTN. If not, then what does disease mean if the corals have been shown to commonly host V. vulnificus?
