Stock tank drain filter

Does anyone have any good mods for a filter of sorts on the drain of the rubbermaid stock tanks?

Looking to prevent large particles etc from going into the return pump.

Just to clarify, are you using the drain from the tank to feed an external return pump?

FWIW, when I was researching the use of a Rubbermaid stock tank, lots of folks complained about the installed bulkhead/drain leaking when they used it. I drilled my own hole in the tank and installed a 2" bulkhead to feed my return pump. No leaks at all!

I don't use a filter on this bulkhead, nor would I. If you restrict the flow to your return pump, it'll cavitate and give you all sorts of headaches.

If you're talking about something completely different, then disregard my my blathering!

I usually avoid filter socks. I'm looking for something to block only large particles.

@conesus_kid - Yup, I'm using the built in bulkhead. Talked with a few people and they said as long as you tighten them it'll be ok. So I'm gonna try that route first. (crossing fingers)

As far as restricting the flow, I'm using a 1.5" drain pipe on the iwaki 55rlt which has a 1" intake. What I'm looking to do is capture large particles maybe a starfish or urchin from going into the 1.5" bulkhead and then into the pump. I have one of the large-finned plastic pre-filters that come with the high end mag pumps, but would have to have some sort of adapter to get it to work correctly. Just wondering what other people did on their setups.

Hopefully that clears it up a bit. If it's still too vague I'll see if I can snap a picture or two to help out.

You could cut out a circle of eggcrate or gutter guard and wedge it in the bulkhead. That'll keep big things, like urchins, out, while still allowing sufficient water flow. Keep in mind that this will need to be cleaned periodically.
