Stocking 29 gallon help

Ive read that 3 mabye 4 fish in a 29 gallon reef??? Does the sump count when calculating the # of fish in a tank?? Or is it due to the amount of space? Im asking cause I have 5 fish that I REALLY like for my tank and they're all small (3-4" as adults). Ive got a 20 gallon sump/fuge so if its more a bio load issue than a space issue I would think I could have an extra fish or two?? Thanks for any input.

I wouldn't put five 4" large fish in a 29 gallon, a lot of fish have territories and overstocking will lead to fights I have had four fish in my 33 gallon but it's four feet long, a 29 doesn't give a lot of space for fish to swim so you have to consider that into what fish you get. Nothing overly active is going to be comfortable. The best thing to do would be list the five fish you really like and get some info on them together, that would really help.

I think that both probably matter.

More water volume will let you stabalize your water params easier. On the other hand space in the tank is just as important for those more dominant species that will aggressively defend their patch of the reef.

What kinds of fish are you interested in keeping?

Thanks guys. Yeah I should've put my wish list on the post. Here's the fish I have in mind........

True Perc Clown 3"
Yellow Watchman Goby 3"
Sixline Wrasse 3"
Flame Angle 4"

Would also like to have one of these two
Lawmower Blenny 5"
Or
Randals Goby 3"

What do you think??

i wouldn't mix goby species in a 29g.. nor put a flame angel, they don't get THAT big, but very active.. well from my experiences at least..

Funny thing... I had a 29g with the same fish as your first 4 choices except that instead of a Flame Angel I had a Coral Beauty.

Things worked fine with those 4, but you would be pushing it with more IMO.

I have a 29 gal with a coral beauty, clown, and reef chromis. Awesome tank mates.

Will probably add one more fish, perhaps a royal gramma.

I also have a BB 29g with 60x turnover and here is my stock list:

- Coral Beauty Angel
- Lemonpeel Angel
- Pink n' Blue Spot
- Maroon Clown
- 2 Damsels
- Six Line Wrasse

My parameters have always been perfect, I use carbon and have a BB chaeto fuge w/ no skimmer. I do 1/3 capacity WC about every 2-3 weeks. I have never had any issues with any fish fighting.

I'd hold off on the flame. I have one in my 65g and he's active as all get out and a bit of a tail chaser.

Go with the lawn mower blenny. A great utility fish, huge personality, reef safe, community member and just really cute:) Just make sure if you get one to feed some algae pellets especially if you have a new tank each day and a little nori from time to time and it will do just great!

I would cut out the flame angel and get the lawnmower blenny. He was my favorite fish when I had him in my 29, but moved everything over to a 50 and now my dwarf lion is my favorite.

Thanks alot for all the input everyone.

Im gonna go ahead and get the lawnmower blenny instead of the flame angle (they do have great personallities from what ive seen/heard) and stick with my top 3 to go along with it.

I have a bb fuge as well with a bunch of cheato and a good size skimmer plus my tank is right around 55X turnover so im hoping i'll be ok.

Im just getting back into the hobby after along time away and like most i'll be upgrading not to far down the road. Till then im sure i'll enjoy having a smaller tank with less fish.

i have and oceanic bio cube 29 and i have a mated pair of perculas, and i also have a pair of scissor gobys (i think theyre a pair, although i cant tell, but theyre always toghether and stay in the same bolt hole...any input on that??) also have a very small court jesters goby, which is about 1-1 1/2 inches. Have no problems at all. Percs dont mess with the gobies and vice versa. they actually all hang out toghether. At night the gobies bolt in thier hole and the percs dive into thier bta. all my params are fine, but i do stay on top of my wtaer changes, and i rinse my mysis shrimp if i add that.
