Stocking my 40b FOWLR - wrasses

We are starting our 40 Breeder back up and I would like some stocking suggestions. My DT is a 40B with 40lbs live rock and 50lbs of sand. The sump a 120 in the basement skimmer and remote deep sand bed. None of this list is set in stone or a must have and we are open to suggestions. Here we go:

3-4 @ Flasher/Fairy Wrasse. Pretty open as to which ones, we like the McCosker's but again open. Suggestions?

3-4 @ Dartfish. Not sure which ones, but like the Blue Gudgeon.

1 @ Blenny. Either Midas, Tailspot, or??.

1 @ Royal Gramma Basslet

1 @ Goby. Court Jester, Hi Fin Red, or ???. Can I do both?

Clean up crew with snails and a few shrimp.

How does this look?

Personally that just looks like a bit too much to me. With that large sump, I don't think water quality will be a problem, but with only a 40b as the DT, I don't think each fish would have enough space and you would see a lot of stress and aggression.

I think you will be fine. The only fish on your list that will show aggression are the wrasses and the blennies. Having multiple flasher wrasses diffuses the aggression between them and the blennies you mentioned aren't bad, especially if added last.

Thanks for the comments. Any suggestions on the order that I add the fish? Everything will be going through tank transfer than 30 days QT. I will most likely be buying online, so getting in groups to save on shipping would be good.

I will definitely keep an open mind. I want the tank to be successful. I am thinking of doing 2-3 wrasses and dart fish compared to 3 or 4.

I think that would be better. 11 fish in a 40b just seemed a bit overstocked, even if they were mostly small fish. Wrasses are awesome though, so I approve of the type of fish

That list looks good, although I have found gudgeons to be reclusive if kept singly.

Personally, I think heavy stocking is fine since the main concerns when overstocking are aggression and water quality. With your size sump water quality won't be an issue and the fish you are interested in aggression isn't much of a concern either.

Royal gramma last, beyond that it doesn't matter. You should be able to add in groups. If you can, I recommend getting the wrasses simultaneously, if not, utilize a social acclimation box to introduce new wrasses to established ones.

So, my sump ended up in a different location and quite a bit smaller in size. It is what it is. It is now 65 gallons of water, plus about another 10 in the skimmer tub (instead of the planned 120 gallons).

Will this effect my stocking plans?

Personally, I think it's still fine, but add slowly and test frequently.

My sump is now fully setup and everything is running great (have not built my ats yet!). My tank is cycled, temp and salinity are stable. I think I am ready for live stock. I will be ordering through vividaquariums.com. This is my plans as far as ordering. How do they look?

First order:

1 - Hi Fin Red Banded Goby and pistol shrimp pair

3 - scissortail dartfish

1 - purple firefish goby

3 - Trochus Snails

5 - Astrea Snails

5 - Scarlet Reef Hermit Crabs

Second Order (several months down the line)

2 or 3 - Flasher Wrasse

1 - midas blenny

Last Order (may not happen - I will go by how the tank is at this point)

1 - Royal Gramma



My questions are:

How does my order of when I am putting my fish in look?

Will the pistol shrimp be OK in the tank while the Shrimp Goby is in QT? Just QT them together? Not purchase ones that are already paired? I was planning on putting the inverts in the DT while the fish are in QT. Not sure how to handle this pair.

I have read that many fish should be placed together in odd numbers. Would this include flasher wrasses? Would I be better of getting 3 over 2?

The order looks fine, though I would swap the order of the midas and royal gramma.
