Stocking Suggestions 220gal.....

I presently have a 220 gal. , 100 gal. sump, ton of live rock with an explosion of mushrooms, RBT anemone, 3 clowns, 3 cardinals, 1 gold spot foxface. I would love to turn this into a large angel and tang tank. I miss the excitement of the fish versus a soft coral tank. Would love to hear some suggestions on how to do this, suggested stock list, and mostly is it possible. Would it be better to leave the mushrooms? I would like to stick with the more hardier fish starting out. Any help would be great!

Unfortinitly those are not very good dems for Larger large angels. I think you could do any Apolemichthys and Chaetodontoplus. You can also do rock beauty, blue face, chrysurus and majestic angels.

Thx, for the input. I will now take your suggestions and learn more about them. How about the mushrooms... would you leave them in the tank or maybe swap out live rock ?

If you do not care that the mushrooms get nipped at then leave them. Although with the mushrooms you may encounter them dying off and it may cause water quality issues? I actually am the type to believe that if it is part of the fishes natural diet I should provide it in the home I have recreated for them. I actually purchase monti frags for my dogface to eat. For the most part the growth of the monti's keeps up with what the dogface eats so there is no need for constant replacement of the frags. But This is only my personal opinion and practice, not a suggestion for you to do the same only an idea for you to consider.

you could def do a few large tangs and maybe a large angel or two depending on the type... A few hardy tangs that i have kept before are yellows, salfins or convict tangs are good to start with. I would not reccomend keeping a yellow and salfin togather however. Goodluck!!

Most large angels in the Pomacanthus and Holacanthus will outgrow a 6-foot 220g, with the exception of majestic (blud-girdled) and possibly annularis (blue ring). Majestic rarely grow larger than 8" in captivity, and annularis 10". I would consider the Chaetodontoplus genus: scribbled, personifer, etc. They usually only attain 7-8" in captivity and are good candidates for a 220g.

For tangs, I'd only go with "medium-sized" tangs, meaning those that don't grow over 8-9" in the wild. Examples are powder blue, powder brown, mimic, etc. You may use Liveaquaria for size references.

+1 this is good advice.

I wouldn't worry about your mushrooms, they should be fine in a FOWLR unless they get eaten.

Why not Apolemichthys?

What stocking order would be suggested for the angels & tangs...... How many would you all try in the 220. My present occupants are small (1.5-2" for the cardinals & clowns) and the Rabbit the largest @ 5". I also forgot to mention that I am running a pretty large skimmer.

If you select angels from different genuses (such as a majestic and a false personifer), you should be able to keep two. I wouldn't keep more than 2 though to avoid aggressions.

I think you can do 2 "small" large angels and 2-3 small-to-medium tangs (e.g., powder blue, purple, etc.), but no more than that.

Great Info....
