Stocking Suggestions

55FOWLR

New member
Hi everyone,
I have a 55 gallon tank and all my fish were wiped out by ich within the past week. I tried treating it but didn't get to it fast enough so now I just have a cleaner shrimp in the tank. I lost about $200 in fish which probably isn't a lot compared to others but it was for me. So I decided I probably won't buy any expensive fish until I make sure everything is going good for a long time. So no more flame angels for me :(

Anyway I read that I need to leave the tank without fish for 8 weeks, does that sound correct to everyone? Also I'm thinking of going with cheaper fish that are still colorful. I was thinking several blue green chromis (how many would I need for them to not attack each other?), firefish, and a coral beauty angel. Are there any other fish that would go good together in a tank of this size? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

yes leave tank empty for at least 8 weeks. Only way to avoid this in the future is to quarantine. Any fish can bring it. As far as cool cheaper fish... cant go wrong with a clownfish. not a big fan of chromis. like asked above are you going reef or FOWLR? that will help pick the fish.

Yes it is FOWLR and I had just lost two clownfish to the ich so I forgot to mention them but I had one orange and one black ocellaris clownfish that I would like to get as well as other fish.

There is still about a 8% chance that the ich will survive 8 weeks of a fallow tank, those numbers jump below 1% if you go the recommended 72 days.

Since they seem to have answered the ich questions i'll try to answer the stocking suggestions. Sine this is a FOWLR I feel like you should be looking into some of the more unique FOWLR choices that you just won't see in many mixed reefs:

Just an FYI I like making suggestion lists that are a little out of the realm of the general clownfish, chromis, tang, ect....

1. Puffers: Valentini, spotted or leopard puffers. These guys have tons of personality, are unique, and beautiful. Most will come around the 25 - 40$ range so they also aren't very expensive. They do have a few special needs with there teeth but you can do some research on if it is worth it for you.

2. Melanarus or Hoevens Wrasse: It seems like your current stocking is mostly fish with lots of color and this wrasse has lots of color. Even better you can find them pretty cheap.

3. Snowflake Eel: I love eels and have always owned one in my mixed reefs including snowflakes, wolf, zebras, and helping setup an aggressive fowlr with a HUGE tessalata. They have a reputation for eating clean up crew but in my experience that's overblown and they tend to go for easier food (Never had one eat clean up crew members to the point where I actually noticed). Make sure you have a tight fitting lid!

Thanks for the suggestions! I also have a freshwater tank and the store told me freshwater puffers were aggressive are saltwater puffers aggressive as well? As for the wrasse they are both amazing and I will definitely get one if I can find it. And I would love an eel but I had assumed they would eat clownfish are they pretty good about not eating other fish?

Most salt water puffers are pretty peaceful. They do have a tendency to nip at corals, clean up crews, and lion fish. Unlike freshwater puffers they are good in community tanks and don't need to be housed species only.
