Stolen Hairy Angler

Well the other day I bought a "sargassum fish" from the LFS for twenty bucks. Started looking at pics an realized hes actually a small 3" striatus!!! He has the worm-shaped esca. And he is HAIRY. Even on his fins. And bright yellow with green spots. I'm guessing this guy could've sold over 100 easy. I'M SO STOKED!!!! I haven't had a frog for years and he was always my fav. fish. So glad he'll be growing, think I read they max at like 8-9 inches?

Right now he's in an 18 gallon with a leaf scorpion and they mostly ignore each other. Got him switched to frozen krill from the stick and i've had him about a month. He works his lure every time I come up to the tank.

Any other pics of hairy frogfish out there?

Should I give the LFS the hundred bucks they missed out on???

What size is the leaf scorpion? Hope you are aware that froggies can, and do occasionally, attempt to ingest any other fish up to twice their own size - including lionfish and other poisonous ones. When that happens, neither fish tend to survive the encounter (the frogfish because its digestive system is too slow to digest something twice its size).

Danorth, thats actually a Hispid Frogfish. Yo can tell by the pom-pom shaped lure. Similar markings, but usually alot less hairy and alot cheaper. Bored? I dont think I could get bored with anglers, even if i had ADD. Sure they sit around alot, but so do I! And theres always feeding time!!!!

Reefcherie, I know the best thing would be to separate them. Normally I would just get rid of the scorp but I really like him. I am going to get Hairy in a bigger tank by himself soon. However I have several friends who have kept then in reef tanks with lots of tankmates for years. Mine already ignores everything thats not on the end of the feed stick!

Frogs and scorps will sometimes change color to match their background. His green spots have intensified.

I foung him at a big yellow fish store in Lakeland.

Just took some pics of Hairy feeding. This one really shows of the elasticity of his stomach (and aggressive feeding behavior!) as he tries to impale himself on the stick. Always thread the point down the center of the bait to cushion the sharp point!!! Also grind the point down some!
