Store vs. Online

Friend of mine works at a fish store, and he says that their biggest competition is the Internet. Obviously online stores are going to be cheaper because they don't have the same overhead as stores do. However, he was telling me the other day about the disadvantages of buying online, and the main things would be waiting for the stuff and problem solving. I can understand waiting a few days to save some money, but he really got me when he told me about any problem solving.

He gave two examples, both he said were situations his customers dealt with. First was lighting. He said he had a customer buy a halide system (along with some other stuff) as a gift which wasn't given for a few weeks. They set up the system and a week or so after the system was set up, one of the ballasts had a problem. They brought the ballast back to the store, (the store checked it out and found it to be a manufacturer problem) and they replaced it immediately. He said that this wasn't a big deal as it was a new setup, but he said what would happen if this were for an established reef where they had bought the product online. He said that since it was out of online's stores dates, he would have to go through the manufacturer, and no one likes that.

Second was with a pump. Person's old pond pump went out, so they rushed to the store to get a new one since their koi were started gasping for air. Got a new pump and when they got home, the pump wasn't working right and had to be replaced, which the store did for free that day.

He said both situations could have been bad if the problem was not fixed withen a day or two tops.

Now the second part is something I 100% agree on with my buddy; buying fish online. I think it is the dumbest thing ever. 1) You do not see the fish before you get it, 2) you do not know if it is eating or not. I know some online stores get stuff from fish distributors and if they say they are eating, the online store can figure on it as well. 3) Shipping companies usually do not take care of boxes of fish as they should. Who cares if the online store will guarantee a fish for 14 days, if a shipping company kills a fish, that's a helpless animal MERCELESSLY KILLED for no reason. 4) I don't know about other areas, but online stores tend to cost about the same as a regular store, if not more. My friend loves to tell me how someone will come in his store and say "XYZ fish is cheaper online" then they will come back in a few hours and buy the fish, usually because shipping costs balance it out. 5) I've worked in retail and one of my coworkers used to work for a shipping company, I know shipping companies break deals with companies who do a lot of shipping. When my business sends stuff out that weights WAY MORE than a box with a styro, fish, and other packing supplies, we get a MUCH better deal than online stores charge for, and we probably send out less packages a month than online stores do a DAY.

In short, I can kinda see why ordering stuff online is better, but why do people buy fish online?

The only fish I buy online are captive bred seahorses. Oceanrider in Hawaii, for example, has fish that are guaranteed to be healthy and hardy. It's also ecologically responsible to buy captive bred seahorses. You can only get their seahorses online directly from them. There are other good seahorse breeders out there too.

You are right in other intances though. Other kinds of fish I would rather buy in the store and see for myself that they are healthy and eating. So unless it's a particular type of captive bred fish, IMO, it's better to buy in a store.

As far as drygoods go, online the prices do tend to be better than the LFS. But, if you are only buying one item the shipping cost negates the advantage, especially if you don't want to wait a looong time for the package to arrive. My LFS doesn't complain about the online market, they have a hard time competing with the local Petco for your basic fish needs.

As for the fish, I can understand hard to find/rare fish. If its absolutely the only way to get the fish, then fine. But what about damsel, clowns, some angels and tangs? Its just crazy if you ask me.

i agree with you about the fish but alot of online stores give you a 14 day money back gaurantee and free shipping on order over X amount of dollars... does your LFS do that?

Many sites care enough about keeping customers to hold fish for extended time before selling. That guarantees eating and good health. The sites that do it say so. The others are just fish warehouses that receive and ship passing the problems on to you. The sites that hold the fish take the majority of loss on themselves more than your pet store. Will your pet store refuse to sell a fish two days after getting it? How do you know the fish is eating like they say?

support the lfs. they probobly arnt making much and they do serve as a place where people get intrested in this hobby

( many people come in look at the tanks.. talk to the people that work there.. get the understanding of what they need to do.. then go online and spend money... compleatly wrong imo)

plus online isnt always cheeper after shipping and handling
i know most of the lights we sell are cheeper bu about 20 or 30 bucks then if you got it onlines ( some even before you pay shipping)

Pick which ever is better for you. Any "good" LFS & online stores will stand by anything they sell. I have had good and bad experiences with both. If one treats you bad, never go back, there are plenty of fish in the tank. Use the Vendor Experience Forum to search for, report and support good and bad retailers.

I've noticed online to be way cheaper even with shipping... if you shop around, you'll find the best price... some things at the lfs are just easier to buy... but lights etc.. are usually 20% cheaper online to the door !!!

Most of the LFS in my area have a very limited supply of dry goods. Maybe one or two brands of skimmer, lighting, etc. If that's what I want to buy, then fine. But, if I want something else, I have no choice but to go on-line. Even if the LFS would special order it for me, the service, etc. wouldn't be through the store. For small or very heavy items, on-line shopping makes no sense. But for larger and more expensive items, it can be cost effective (shipping is often free for large purchases) and I don't think service will be that hard (if needed).

Also, there are many stories of LFS's selling customers products they don't need or are otherwise inappropriate. On-line purchasing means that you have to decide what you need before placing the order and won't be 'talked into' things by LFS employees who may be pushing items based on store inventory, etc rather than on the basis of your tank's needs. I know that not LFS's are like this but it is equally true that not all LFS's provide the level of service and expertise mentioned in this thread.

As for fish, I've had good luck buying on-line - well packed and carefully shipped. However, I much prefer to buy from an LFS's when possible. I just wish that our local LFS would sell more captive bred stock.

I like to support my LFS because they support me. Their staff recognize me when I come in the store and a couple of them can even say to me, "So how's your royal gramma doing?" (or some other critter I have in my tank). Most of the staff at the one I frequent have their own SW tanks and are knowledgeable. When I ask them a question they don't know the answer to, they say so and either get someone else who might know or, if no one is there, suggest other places I might find the answer.

My dry goods purchases are fairly limited, except for food. I don't dose anything (I have a FOWLR + inverts, no corals.)

Beyond my original tank setup, I've bought most of my other equipment used through my local reef club.

I did buy some stuff from an on-line store just this week. They are a sponsor for my local reef club. I paid more than I would have at one of the larger online stores, but I'm willing to do that to support a local small business.

I don't think there's anything wrong with buying stuff online, even livestock. If I were in a place where I had to watch every penny in my budget, I'd be more likely to do critical comparisons. As it is, I feel like I can afford to a pay a little more to help ensure that a quality LFS will be available to me. They are there in the event of an emergency. They are a great source of information. Wandering around looking in their tanks gives me more things to research and learn about, and exposes my 3 yo grandson to the variety of aquatic life.

I agree with all of the above especially about buying fish online. Locally, the LFS don't carry a wide range of dry goods and if they do have it, it has about 2 years worth of dust on it or it's marked up about 40% (a CS 125 Super Skimmer online for $125 shipped, there they wanted $225 :( ). Also, it's discouraging to listen to someone at the LFS trying to sell someone a package deal when it's better to piece things together.

So IMO, it depends on your local fish store. I would MUCH rather support at local store of any kind than buy online but sometimes it's a no brainer. I will definitely buy ALL of my fish online and probably try and buy corals as well. Just my two cents...

I like supporting my LFS and online stores. With the LFS they know me and I have been going there for 8 years now. But I will not pay $180 for a light when I can get it for $110 shipped. I buy most off my things from my LFS but when a super skimmer is $110 in the LFS and $65 before shipping nad I can order everything for my tank at once and not have to wait a week till they order everything I'm going to go to the LFS. Don't get me wrong my LFS manager knows me very well and when I moved gave me all the bags I needed to move.

None of my LFS offer any kind of guarantee on live fish. They don't have very good selections either.
Buying online gives me a guarantee and a great selection. I don't get to see the fish before I buy most of the time, but so far every fish I've bought online has exceeded my expectations.
Buying fish online is way cheaper for me too. I can get fish at 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of my LFS. I make sure that I buy enough to get free shipping and there's no tax!

This is a no brainer in my situation.

Wow, I really feel sorry for some of you guys. Some stores around me offer up to 3 weeks for fish! I've priced fish in my around compaired to online, and for about 75% of fish, they are $5 give or take! Thats right, I've seen fish online for MORE than store prices, and YES, this is before shipping! So maybe it is just my area. Thats good to know! :D

The best LFS where I live does not have a guarantee on fish. I think many stores use this as a crutch. Its easier to sell fish right away then to hold them for awhile before they put them out to sell. If they are healthy fish, then why should they? My LFS feeds all fish before they sell it, even if the buyer asks or not. IF the fish I buy were to die on me after I bought it, it would be my fault - not theirs. Some LFS do things the right way, and they should be rewarded with your patronage.

quality and lfs dont go together in my area... crappy selection and some what unhealthy fish, lfs employess are high school kids that will sell you anything your eyes lay on...

not to mention online is cheaper for 90% of the stuff including live stock around here... my lfs is good for frozen foods etc.. stuff I need NOW not then...

i still dont like the idea of buying livestock online. for 2 reasons. first, i dont get to see the fish. this is important for several reasons but the main one for me is the health of the fish. i wont buy a fish without watching it for 10 mins or so. if its not acting right, then it probably has some health problems, and i skip it. second, both the LFS that i deal with both have good selections, and their prices are competitive with online prices w/ shipping.

now drygoods is a whole other ballgame. both LFS are about 45mins from me. im looking at about $6-$7 in gas to go there, just to find what im looking for is 2x the price as online. and shipping 1 small item is only $6-$7. so unless i need something that day, which is rare. i get most of my drygoods online. i usually get frozen foods from PetSmart, since they are cheaper than the LFS.

i can feel the pain of running a retail store these days. i ran a paintball shop for 3 years, and each year we lost more business to the internet, and big retailers like Wal-mart. so much the owners had to close the store.

just my 2¢

This issue is brought up a lot. Not just with fish stores, but in other fields as well. As time goes by, people are just going to have to live with it. Could it put local stores out of business? Absolutely...To survive, they will have to evaluate what is really bringing in the money, and focus more on that area of their store. When I renovated my kitchen, I bought all of my solid maple doors for $12 each with free shipping. The cheapest I could get them for locally was $70 each for the same style door. I weighed the differences...I could pay $240 for the doors online, or pay $1,400 locally and support a local store. To me it was a no brainer. The company I work for sells home theater equipment. The only way for us to beat the online stores is to sell custom lines that are price protected, and to provide excellent service to our clients.

if you have a good lfs that you trust then the store is the way to go, even if the price is a little higher. In addtion when you are a good loyal customer of a lfs they will think of you when certain livestock comes in and call you when new livestock arrives. In addition you may get some discounts as a good customer. I do and i know many other customers do at my lfs, not much but i save like 5 bucks here and there. Like cheers they know your name and treat you well. I would stay away from the large chain stores, the only good thing about those places is the kids selling the fish don't know squat and there are fish misnamed and tagged and you can get a good deal at there expense.

I'll try to go to the LSF for what I can... but cost is a killer on some items... I know that alot of stores have a hard time competing with the internet...
but.. for instance,,, I just purchased a bucket of IO salt from Drs. F&S... $41.97 to the door.... LFS - same size bucket... $95.00 not including tax... ouch!!! A Friendly smile from the LFS still won't help make up for a $50 a month extra cost!!
