Storytime again for us fish nerds... Southern Japan and Guam dive/fish trip 2012 :)

i wonder how many interruptas you have seen in the whole trip to start with some videos....must be a incredible experience overall......

Nice, John!

I was in Japan in November but did not get a chance to dive or see any aquariums or aquarium stores. :(

Love your pics!

Great story John. Isn't it amazing how Japan gets such quality seafood to eat? I don't know how they get such plump/juicy stuff and we in America can't!

That Interrupta is so small but did you see the other one. When I went to pick up my juvi, Koji had another one that was was probably 3/4" at most! It still looked like a fry.

Is that the one in the video in post #8?
He said it was the smallest one he has seen in 20 years...

How is yours doing?

No humaguy. When I went to pick mine up, there was a tinier angel in another social acclimation box. I actually thought about switching mine to this one but it was too small and I stuck with my original pick. Mine was around 1.25" to 1.5" and this one was at least a 1/3 smaller!

Mine is doing well. Gaining weight quickly. Is not hurting any corals so far.

Thanks again everyone...

Hey guys, the one in my photo next to my key was insanely tiny... the diameter of the circular Volvo emblem on my car key is 1/2". This fish was in a little acclimation box on the left side of the display at the top of the stairs on the second floor with the two bandit angels in it... this thing was post larval!

This was a real treat to read and enjoy. Thanks for sharing, John.

Thanks Melissa! Congrats on the new pup!

What camera and lenses are you using for these pictures?

Most of the fish shots are taken with my Nikon D7000 with a Nikon 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Micro-Nikkor lens... for many of the photos traveling around I use my Fujifilm XP point and shoot as I don't like to lug my DSLR and lenses around... the little point and shoot is waterproof and drop proof... which comes in handy for traveling on boats and traveling with the kids!

Without putting much thought into this question there are a few things that jump out... where there is demand there is supply... the Japanese eat a lot of fish... and they pay premium prices... and it helps that they have a very high population density... and their country consists of all islands!

I traveled with Koji to a very well known fish market there in Wakayama on one afternoon... here are a bunch of images of that... quite amazing the variety...

Here is the tuna section alone...

Here's a tiny random piece of fatty tuna I grabbed... price just about $250!

And how about some squid... of the fresh kind...

And the dried kind...

John - thanks for the seafood shots, lol.

You were right. This was the Interrupta in the tank with the two bandit angels. It did look post larval when I was there but must have filled in more in your picture. Amazing that such a small fish was caught!

Japan is the land of expensive things. We know the seafood is expensive. How about some fruit?

$23 for 6 Strawberries anyone?

Or how about a melon for $116?

where is fugu..?

Plenty of fugu to go around... here are a couple of shots from downtown Osaka showing some giant fugu...

A delicious sake I had... topped with a fugu fin... :)

And some shots of a previous trip... this is Nori, perhaps the hardest working employee at Blue Harbor... if you've been in communication with BH, you've been in communication with Nori... angelfish fans will appreciate that her favorite fish is the clipperton angel... :)

Here she is at an excellent restaurant we went to with some amazing seafood... her facial expression indicating that this is one of our plates of fugu... :)
