Strange spot on my blue tang

I have a medium size blue tang that I have had for about a year and a half. I noticed today that there is a lighter yellow area in the middle of its tail that wasn't there yesterday. Its acting normal eating and swimming and being the boss of the tank as usual. I barely noticed it b/c its not much different in color then the rest of the tail but it's got a slight bump to it. I don't know if I can get a picture b/c its so hard to see and this fish doesn't really like to stay that still for photos. Any suggestions?

Ok so this is not the most cooperative fish for pics but its the best I got. Its a bump on the right side of the tail, but its visible from both sides the right more then the left. Its the whiteish area on the tail.

Hard to tell from the photo. Does it appear like a cottinish growth? If so, look up lymphocystis. This is a viral aliment that is usually self-limiting and will go away with improved nutrition (do you soak your foods in vita chem or similar), and time. May be something else...hard to tell.

Gina,

It can't be Lymphocystis, it developed too quickly. The virus causes the epithelial cells to grow too large, so the rate of development of the disease is governed by the speed at which the skin cells grow - which can be fast, but not overnight. Besides, its in a rare spot to see Lympho.

You'd think that since I'm positive it isn't Lympho, that I must know what it is - but that isn't the case, I haven't a clue....

That is the worst looking avatar I have ever seen Jay!

Yeah this fish is still acting normal and eating great. The spot hasn't gotten any larger but its still there. I don't usually soak their food in anything, garlic when I get a new fish but I haven't had any recent additions as far as fish go. I enjoy the ones I have. Well I guess I can just wait and see if it gets worse or just goes away. I'll post weather its gets better or worse over the next few days.
Thanks for the help

Ok so the spot is gone and the area that it was on looks good as well. I still don't know what it was but the fish never missed a beat eating and acting normal the whole time. Thanks for the help.

Glad to hear that. So that confirms it wasn't Lymphocystis after all - it went away too fast as well. I still don't know what it was either....
