Strange Zoa

Hello everyone.

I have a plain old brown zoanthid...not sure of the variety and it's lookinf a little odd. Maybe one of you can help me. It's been fine for months but this morning I looked in the tank and was shocked.
It no longer looks like a zoanthid...it looks like a big brown Frogspawn. Big brown bubbles where the polyps used to be.

I'm a little concerned...is this normal?

Could the zoanthids just be closed? Sometimes in the morning or when a crab crawls on them they will close up in a little ball. If they stay like that for more than 5 days I would start to worry. Can you get a picture? That would help confirm what is going on.

hey dave i should be up that way a little later on today. If it still looks bad shoot me a pm and i'll stop and take a look at it

That doesn't look good. Actually I have seen zoanthids look like that before and it was right before they died. I realized I had gotten some zoanthid eating flatworms from a mail order place in Florida and they were killing my zoas. I bought a melanurus wrasse and he ate them all and the zoas looked better shortly after. I am not saying you have zoanthid eating flatworms but it looks like something is upsetting the zoas so I would try to figure out what is going on before it is too late. It could be anything IMO. Have you done anything recently that could have upset them? Added new corals? A new fish, invert, or live rock? How are your water params?
