Stupid noob question

How do you attach the corals to the liverock? and even more stupid...how do you feed them? Or do you just drop the coral in the tank and it finds its own home? haha thanks

I just asked this question and here's what I got.....It depends on what kind of corals you're talkin' about. Softies, Zoas, Hard corals, etc.

Some corals create their own food through specialized algae that they make on their own from interaction with light.

Figure out which kind of corals you want to keep and then go to the appropriate forum and the folks that are experienced with those will be a great help to you. Hope that helps !

you can put a dop of superglue on the base and hold it a few secs on the rock you want to attach it to.

If it's a softy then you can sometimes rubber band it to the rock for a few days.

It all really depends on the type of coral you are trying to put in.

Coral doesn't move on it's own, so what I suggest is to find out what coral you want/have, look up what kind of flow and lighting it needs and then place in tank accordingly

make sure you can actually support it's lighting needs too before you make a purchse - it will save you much frustration in the long run.

feeding: this also depends on the type of coral, but you can use a turkey baster and feed it some baby brine shrimp or cycopleese. I watch for their mouths to be open, then I "puff" a little cloud of brine shrimp around them.

It very much depends on the coral. What is your tank setup? What is your lighting? Water parameters? Tank setup? Placement is also important :)

There are some mobile corals, such as members of the plate coral family (Heliofungia).

Good answer!

Ideally, you would research a coral before you bought it, find out what type of light and water flow it needs, and make sure you can provide for it. Then pick a spot in your tank that you feel would be appropriate. Most corals come on a piece of rock, and I usually find a crevice in the live rock and jam them in there. If it doesn't stay, superglue it.

I recommend you start with some simple mushrooms to get used to coral handling. You can just place them on a rock in a corner where flow is really low. Let them attach and then you can move the rock where youd like it.

Good Luck!

yea I'm on the research stage right now, sorry if this was a stupid question. I dont have a reef setup, dont even have a saltwater tank. I will though in the near future begin one, which will be a reef setup...but not till I'm fully confident I can manage one.

I have a 60g hex tank that is pretty tall that I planned on using but the lfs told me it would be horrible for saltwater. I bought cichlids and made it a cichlid tank, which is going good..but I can't get reefs off the mind..haha.

you are doing right by researching first. Take your time getting into this hobby, I know it's hard since its such an exciting hobby, but in the long run it will be what keeps you sane.
