stupid question

I am looking at the tunze doc 9010 skimmer for starting a new saltwater tank. my tank is the standard 55 gallon size. This is probably a stupid question but is the skimmer totally immersed in the water or does the water level have to be lowered? My aquarium is the standard 20 inches deep. I am just unfamiliar with the in tank skimmers.

If you will be using it in tank the skimmer mounts on holder rails (included) or you can use the optional magnet holders. The water level does not have to be changed but you need to have an open top for the cup to stick out.

The 9005 would work, it is designed to fit under canopies as the cup is very short, you would need a very tall canopy for the 9010.

Do you know how tall? I have quite a bit of clearance above the tank in my canopy. Would the 9005 work ok on a 55g and what would I need to add to sump later if desired?

If you plan to add a sump later on the 9005 you need a sump kit, the 9010 is a better value for in sump because it includes this kit and is only $20-$30 more than a 9005 with the kit. The 9005 will be plenty for a 55. The cup requires 3.5" of clearance above the tank. The 9010 cup needs 5.5"
