Stupidity just needs to be called out sometimes

I tell you what, if someone here makes the phytoplankton, I will breed the tiggerpods again. I already have the cultivation cones for them, I might as well use them huh?

It's pretty much just plastic bottles filled with 1.019 specific gravity SW, air pump, some fertilizers, a light, and a starter culture.

I'll give it a shot starting this weekend. I just read that you can use DTs as the starter culture... so I've already got everything I need. :)

Most everyone I know of said it was more of a pain than what it was worth for one system... I can see doing it as more of a club project though... :)

Pretty much :) I did it in the beginning but switched to commercially-produced algae pretty quickly. It's easy, but reaching for a bottle in the fridge is hard to beat ;) We dose some into the shark system for all of the sponges still growing on Mel's rock in there. The sponges do really well (even keeping-up with a sponge-eating angel), but I don't know if we can thank the phytoplankton or not since we didn't run a control...

Don't know how different the commercial preparations would be for reef tanks (as opposed to, say, baby fish...), but I would worry that in culturing it ourselves, we have no way of washing the cells or removing the culture media (and fertilizers) so it doesn't add unwanted nutrients to the tank (something the commercial producers claim to do). Maybe a used centrifuge somewhere?...

OK, my own stupidity to report... I somehow formed the belief that coraline algae had some sort of death grip on acrylic, probably since coraline algae is calcerous and from what I've read about how hard it is to remove. Coraline on the acrylic false wall of my AIO tank is the only thing that's really bothered me about my tank, enough that I wanted to replace the tank... Well, I somehow got the brilliant idea to finally gave it a shot with an algae scraper and the stuff came off in big sheets really easily. Tank looks a lot cleaner now. Duh.

I love the fact that this thread has been bumped... :p

I still think you need to go bigger though Joel... ;)

Bigger tank or bigger stupidity? I'm certainly capable of both!

I did set up that 20L as a prop. tank (growing frags > colonies on LR) after the swap anticipating a bigger tank after we move. There was and is no room for most of the stuff I got in the 14g.

Speaking of stupidity: Some more notes @Paul...
He didn't use the 10% off coupon. He just loves paying full price!
Also, he started a thread on R2R asking to trade for pink and gold rics... I posted a pic of a pink and gold, and guess what his first choice is? My purple ric! lol

Yeah, your other rics didn't look nearly as good. Plus, I went and ordered a pink. I asked for the 10% off in the message and some staff guy there emailed me immediately and said they would process that. Should I be worried????
