Submerged Skimmer Pump Question...

You know this might just be personal preference but what does everyone that has a submerged skimmer pump do for the intake of that pump. Strainer/Foam on the intake??? For instance I have a Mag 5 pushing water from my sump into my EV-120 and I have a problem now and then where it slows down from the sponge filling up with gunk.

So in other words do you guys go Foam, Strainer or nothing on the skimmer intake pump?

Thanks!!!

I have none on the intake or output of my skimmer... but then again I'm running a jebo 182 on a maxijet1200 w/ mj600 impeller with a straw from burgerking as a venturi... pulls a jar of goober(peanut butter brand) full of skimmate about every 48hours... so :\ until some mula comes along I'll work with this lol

I don't have anything covering the intake to my sedra9000 as it didn't come with anything... I should be running a filter sock, but I don't do that either... O well.

IMO the sponge is a good idea. Keeps snails out of the pump. If you have a problem with the pump slowing down because the sponge fills up with gunk then it simply means you aren't cleaning the sponge often enough. I would add cleaning the sponge to your weekly maintenance routine to keep it clean and keep it from becoming a nitrate factory.

I have a pump in my sump, no filter or sock of any kind, had it in there for two years now, only cleaned it 3 times, works just fine. I forget what brand pump it is though. Knock on wood, never had a problem with it running like that.

Got a rio pump on my skimmer with a strainer. I run cheato and have to pull off small strands all the time off the strainer. Old HOB skimmer had sponge which I took off after a while since it was a pain to detach and clean.

I have the same situation in my 55 with a DIY sump/fuge. I just clean if off every few days. In the 90, the strainer has larger openings on the Rio 3100 that feeds my skimmer. The overflow water splashes down right on it, so it blasts away anything that would otherwise accumulate.
