Success with Sun polyps?

If a colony of sun polyps is fed only once a week (But consistently once a week), will it be survive?

Or does it NEED to be fed more than that?

I feed it by removing it from the tank and feeding it in a bucket with a cube of mysis. I believe all the polyps are being fed.

Thanks!

I've had the best results by feeding every other day. Imo, 1 time a week isnt enough especially just mysis. I would suggest at least 2 times a week but really i'd say every other day. May want to try a little meatier food. I use a mix of shrimp, scallop, mussels, and squidd with some cyclopeeze, selcon and zoecon thrown in.

Thanks for your input sufink..

I keep mostly SPS in my current tank and I'm concerned about damaging water quality. If I feed every other day. I would probably feed more food to the sun coral in one week. Than I would feed my entire tank in a month....

I feed squid daily...I've got yellows, oranges, and blacks all on one rock. they're small colonies but are growing rapidly. If you can handle the water changes and stuff I'd do it daily for best results :)

Where is it located in the tank? If you can, put it on the sand so youy can cover it with a small bowl. Then you can feed more and not mess up the water quality. Do you have shrimp or hermits? My fire and cleaner shrimp and hermits eat any leftovers after i take the bowl off of the sun coral.

The problem is that...what comes in... must come out =)

Even if the suncoral ate every single piece of food i placed in the tank. THe fact that there are 30-40 polyps and each one needs so much feed each week, means that there is a lot of poop that this guy is going to be releasing!

You should be fine with water changes and skimming. My tank has done just fine with feeding every other day for a few years. But then, I believe SPS tanks need to be fed as well. :)

I have never seen mine expel anything and i feed it lots of meaty food often??
I have never thought about it but he must be right, it must be expelling a decent amount of waste.
Anyone have a definite answer or have seen their sun "pooping"?

I've never seen mine expel anything. I used to feed mine everyday, but my August work schedule has been insane and I instead feed once every three days. Mine seems better now than when I fed everyday, since then I actually get more polyp extension. (I put it in a separate container when I feed and feed it as much stuff as it will eat. So it needs a few days to adjust and look hungry again.)

So how exactly do you guys feed?

Do you guys use the seperate container trick? how much bigger that the sun coral does the container have to be? And do you make up some water for it? or do you just use the water from the tank?

Does it learn to come out at a certain time of day? Or can I pull it straight out of the tank (when it's closed) and entice it to open in the container?

Thanks

I've got a relatively small tank (24g) so I just put a tiny bit of frozen cyclopeeze in the tank to entice them to come out and eat, then I feed them squid out of a pipette.
