Suddenly Very Cloudy Water

I thought gfo wasnt supposed to tumble because it creates fines when they grind against each other?

Interesting. I thought it was supposed to slightly tumble so that it would not stick together and form a hard mass. I thought it was carbon that was not supposed to tumble.

I could be wrong on this but in any case my GFO was lightly tumbling in the reactor. I emptied it out about an hour ago however to see if it will help.

Honestly it looks like there may fines in the sump, socks and skimmer since they are all about the same color now as the GFO.

Would this cause the cloudyness/bloom?

I change them every 3-4 days once they get dirty and the water starts flowing over the top of them.

Good point on cleaning them. I normally wash them with some bleach when I remove them. I have multiple sets so I wash them as they come out of the sump and let them dry. I did wash one set last week with some of my tank towels and used some vinegar in the wash instead of bleach. I wonder if the vinegar could be the issue. They were rinsed and dried as usual prior to using them.

Try vacuuming your substrate as well. Just in case anything is hiding underneath.

Can't tell from the picks, how thick is your sand bed? What could be in there that would be giving him problems?

Thanks all for the help with this. I was able to get it resolved. Turns out it was the GFO. Not sure if it was tumbling to much even though it was barely tumbling at the top oin the reactor. It was not fines from not rinsing as the GFO a had been in the reactor for about a week to 10 days before this happened. Once I emptied the GFO a from the reactor and put on new filter socks it started clearing up immediately. Within 2 hours I could see to the back of the tank and this morning it was very clear. Tank looks great now after about 18 hours after removing the GFO.

Try to use a polishing filter pad and within a day or so youll be clear as can be

Definitely thr gfo, u need to rinse it off first or slow the flow down.

Probably not was going to but too many things around the house to do and I have like no room in my tank for any new stuff... I go by petland weekly I work that way often..I live by Lowes if you ever want to stop by

I change them every 3-4 days and wash them with nothing else in the washer with a little bleach then air dry.
