I had 2 blue throat triggers in my tank and everything was fine for months. About a week ago both hid and refused to come out. Last night when I went down the smaller one had died and seemed to be a little beatin up. Now today the other one is out and about like nothing happened. All other fish during this were perfectly fine like nothing happened. Is it possible the smaller one was also a male not showing colors and the 2 fought and the bigger one won? Very upset today

Not an expert...but for many months, I thought that I had a Female BT...in the past 2 months the fins are showing much more color, and the 'blue' is starting to show on HIS face.

Yea I think thats what happened here never saw them fight but both were theonly 2 effected by the whole situation now the one left is fine. It kinda stinks

How was it beat up? Do you have a cleanup crew? Because hermits and even snails could easily have made the body look pretty "worked over" but that doesnt mean a fish had to do it.

Has your tank been established for a while? Did you add something to your tank a week ago that maybe caused the blue throats to go into hiding? Like even something as simple as more rock, it doesn't necessarily have to be another fish that caused them to hide.

Anyway, it's hard to say. In my experience, when triggers fight they dont go into the rocks and hide for a week to do it.

Ive had this happen with fish beyond triggers. I think its the same thing, its not really in your control, its more the personality of developing fish. I had 2 clowns do the same thing, I had 2 B.Cardinals do the exact same thing and even had a school of chromis do that very exact same thing.

But like Recty was saying, even the smallest changes could trigger this, or as I mentioned, the change in a developing fish. For all you know, those two could have just been tolerating each other for a few months till 1 decided thats it, im in charge.

Right nothing changed in the tank. Just one day this started. And it wasn't the clean up crew because it was at the top of rocks wedged in like he was trying to get away from something very odd spot to be so I think he got stuck and the other took advantage. Tank has been established for 20 months so no problems there. Oh well i guess nature takes it's path and have to be a little more careful next time
