Suggestion: Club Owned Quantum Meters

Has the club ever considered buying Quantum Meters for members to borrow for a few days? This is something IMAS (a club in Idaho) recently did. I'm putting a tank up right now and I'd LOVE to know what PAR my corals will be getting--however I can't justify the $300+ price tag for an item I'd use for a few days, then put away for 6 months!

I'd love to see the club own 3 or 4 of these things and just spread them out over the state via different board members. Hell, we could even look to get them donated!!!

Members would be required to pick them up and return them to the person they got them from or maybe be responsible for shipping them or something. I know I'd drive an hour each way to borrow one for a week or two.

It's just a thought...something to give the new BOD to kick around. :)

Thanks for reading!

I got a par meter kevin, you can borrow it.as far as the club getting one i suggested this a while back and i didnt get a whole lot of responses from the BOD or anyone for that matter.

I will probably take you up on that. The new reflectors are in the mail now so it will be a few weeks before I'm ready. Where do you live anyway?

Dan, you mind stopping at my house in Nanticoke some weekend and giving the meter a run. I'm interested in what kind of #'s I'm getting with my DIY hammertone Lumenacrs with 175w Iwasaki 15K's.

sure no problem larry,I probably wont have a free moment for at least a couple weekends but if you want to borrow it to check it out before then you are welcome to it.

Can you bring it to your shop someday? I can pick it up at lunchtime. Your shop isn't far from the office I work at.

Dan, I'll drop the meter off at your shop on Monday. Thanks.

no problem.results are as i expected for the iwasaki 15k bulbs and as sanjay reported also.did you compare an old iwasaki to a new and if so what did you find.also what ballast are you using, that should also be noted

I'm still waiting for my new bulbs. They are on the FedEx truck out for delivery...lol. I will test those too and see if there is a big difference. All were done with an Advance magnetic ballast.

Also, all the bulbs have aprox 12 months of use on them. The Coralife 5500K might have closer to 24 months. I used those in the early 90's.

Here's a brand new Iwasaki 15K with about 15 mins of use.
6" below bulb out of water - 1655
1" below surface - 725
12" below surface - 360
bottom - 240

So are the Iwasakis the bulbs of choice now?

I need to get 3 new 250 watters for my setup and I was leaning towards something in a 10k because I want really good growth for the first year or so and I thought the 10k bulbs tended to put out more par than the 15k but I guess I was wrong.

unfortunately kevin they only come in 175 watt.geisman or aquaconnect both have real high par and the geisman coral has the best of both worlds and gives great color also
