Probably going to be a large turn out at this months meeting...Bump up the raffle items like last years raffles again please :) Good chance to make some money with some nice items.
Erik

What kinds of items would you most like to see (open to everyone's suggestions) More dry goods? Livestock fish vs frags.....more prop tools...mag subscriptions? I was thinking about gas gift cards (thought it up when gas was almost $4 a gallon though)

I would keep it hobby related... we dont consider it a COST for gas to goto a meeting!! LOL

see personally I like a more the merrier scenario... I would rather see 5 $40 items then a $200 item (unless I was to win that one though....

If you want to do gift cards maybe to the critter or other saltwater place? see if they will give free ones for the advertisement or maybe buy a $50 gift cert. for $25 or something? to raffle

Coral and fish in the raffle. Only dry good raffle item should be the members raffle...Get back to what it was in the years past. Don't not buy a good item to get a free frag or coral from someone breaking down a tank. Those items should be a bonus. I for one haven't spent one dollar on this years raffles. In the past I've spent a few hundred per year.

Keep it simple, Nice livestock equals a good raffle. Most everyone has been in the club a few years, Stick with what has worked in the past IMO. I know I've heard Raffle sucks I'm leaving early a few times this year. I no I'm guilty of saving that too.

Still spending the same amount in the raffle as years gone by. As usual we have an SPS, LPS, Soft coral, fish, invert and dry good for the member's raffle. Jim gets the 6-8 items like always. If we had an item donated like the starfish that everyone wanted and put tickets in for then we just saved the club $20-$40 on buying an invert that week. The raffle didn't suffer due to a donation. There were plenty of people looking to win the mated pair of coral banded shrimp that were free as well as the big maroon clown that would have easily cost us all $40 if it had not been generously given to us.

Last month we made the choice to keep the entire meeting geared toward fragging and propagation and that was the reason for raffling off $450 worth of tools/glue/plugs. I have heard lots of positive feedback from people that it was nice to have 50-75% of the people leaving with a raffle item instead of just 5 people. That was a different approach than usual but it was a nice change IMO.

Maybe some of the more seasoned members don't want the items in the raffle this year but I think Jim is doing a great job in choosing within the limited budget. We, as a club, could use the money that we have to purchase larger raffle items but then we would eventually run out of money and have to raise the membership dues again just to stay afloat and then maybe lose members that don't want to pay $30 or so to be a member.

I hope to hear some feedback from others and see if it there is anything positive to say about it. I have always found something worth dropping a $10 or $20 bill for a chance to win but maybe I just consider it no big deal to give the club $10 - $20 if I don't win. I know it will be used to purchase something I may win next time :)

I haven't missed paying out for raffle items in years.

Any other opinions out there?

I still think the raffles are nothing like last few years. Im pretty sure I no what has been spent on the past raffles and what is collected being the one who has collected and paid for them. C-sea isn't hurting on money why the limited budget now??, I know when we had a nicer raffle when a speaker came in we always maybe a good chunk of money.

Kevin are you sure Jim is picking the items out? I thought he was just showing up to bagged items. I no for sure that has been the case atleast a few times.

I no I've talked with a few active posters on here and heard similar comments as to what I've posted.

It's just a suggestion, to step up the raffle again.

I know last year we'd bring in 8-10 items from salty and I'd bring in 3 or so from aquatic tech every month and more at x-mas.

Considering we've only had two meetings this year, I am a bit confused as I haven't seen a huge difference in the raffle between this year and last? If I recall correctly, some months have always been better than others, its kinda the luck of the draw based on what's available.

Last month was a special case considering the cost of the fragathon was significantly more than in previous years. Furthermore, we thought it would be nice to have more winners since there was a lot of new people.

I think the game plan going forward is to continue the tradition of the raffle but keep in mind that the dollar doesn't go as far lately. Coral prices over the past 1-2 years have risen steeply.

True.

It was just a suggestion for a chance to make some money and make some members that have noticed the smaller live stock raffles with a larger raffle this month like the past. More people should be at this meeting since we have a speaker.

no offense to the speakers or activities planned but the raffle is the most exciting part of the meeting.. I enjoy the speakers etc. but look forward to the raffle.

Eric..... is it the quality? quanity? size? or selection of items?

just curious.

Erik, if I were you I'd consider Marc a bad luck charm. Every time he's in town someone wants to (edited).

It's fantastic how in the know you are in regards to the income and expenses of the club. If there would have been some records left behind for the new officers to go by, they would have been useful, but there weren't any. Having the numbers locked up in your melon doesn't do anyone else any good.

Now as far as "just picking up bagged items", this is the deal:

Does this happen occasionally? Yes it does. Is there a reason for it? Yes there is. Do I care what you think about that? No I don't.

In the instances I know the odds are slim I will be able to make it to the store to personally pick out items, I make sure I email Dan and Sean to let them know. They've been providing raffle goods to the club for years and are already familiar with what's expected as well as what is able to be spent. I have confidence in their judgement, and as long as I'm fullfilling my responsibility of making sure the raffle items are ready for pickup and get them to the meeting, then I consider my duties carried out.

When I first took on the raffle responsibilities last year, I gave it my best shot and tried to do it with the method that would most benefit the club. The weekend before the meeting I went and picked out the items, took pictures at the store, and even started a post on the C-Sea board so the members would know ahead of time what was going to be offered. That lasted one meeting.

Dan decided he didn't want to hold items for a week that had been "reserved" for the upcoming meetings. To further complicate matters, the new store hours were established that made Tuesdays and Wednesdays unavailable for item selection.

So let's review now. Selecting items on:

Monday - Nope. Too early in the week. Can't hold items.
Tuesday - Nope. Store closed.
Wednesday - Nope. Store closed.
Thursday - My son plays 8th grade basketball. Until January, the games are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thursdays are always the away games. Am I going to miss out on going to his games? Hell no.
Friday - There'll be times when I can get to the store early enough to pick out items but it's cutting it close. I get off work at 4PM in North Ridgeville. This leaves me just enough time to make the trip from Ridgeville to Vermillion, pick the items up and then drive straight out to Cleveland.

I have no problem letting anyone who would like to assume my post take over. I'll give all the supplies to whoever wants to do it at the next meeting. There is no time in my life for this type of aggravation, particularly in regards to something that's done on a totally voluntary basis.

Relax Jim, I wasn't taking any shots at you, I was defending you that its not always your choice as to what shows up and how much. It was Just a suggestion to add more.

The former board members offered to attend a Board meeting with you guys, Our offer was declined. It was brought Up By Jeff and shot down by Kevin. So I was told.

Here's my input from what the raffle did last year, It seems to be the larger raffles we had the more money we made. People looked at the large number of bags and figured there chances were better at winning something with there 10-20 bucks. When theres 5 or 6 items the chances aren't as great to win. When we'd spend 200 on items we usually made 300 in sales, when we did 300 we made 500 in sales. Sometimes it would be close to even though on smaller turn out meetings but that happens. C-sea is not out to make money or lose money either. I would guess that atleast 50% probably more come to the meetings to see the raffles and try to win. the other 50% or so come to socialize and talk reefs.
I personally don't come for the raffles, but I like the fact that it brings people back.

I have no issue what so ever with the quality of live stock from Dan's at all, I was just suggesting we bumped the raffle items we picked up from Dan again and get more from him. Maybe even try to get people excited about the meetings again. Like making it known.."This month were having a extra special raffle"

Not that what I have to say means ANYTHING because I am not a member yet, but I am planning on being at the meeting friday. This will be my first one and I am planning on becoming a member. I am excited about it, but don't you think this is a bit out of hand? Stuff like this on fourms kind of kills the excitement.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Hope to see you at the meeting.

I have one word for all of this........and I am going to refrain from using it ................I really wish things could be delt with a little maturity ....after all most of us are adults !!
lets try and have a good meeting and leave all the bull at Home this time !!!!

sorry if i offended anyone one, i was just making a suggestion. I didn't intend to air out behind the scenes info.

I think its healthy to air grievances and make suggestions. With that being said, I ask anyone with questions, suggestions or complaints about the inner workings of the club to feel free to email or PM any/all of the board members and we would be happy to take any matter under consideration.

Happy reefing and I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday.
