I bought a Aqua medic 250 pendant and ballast but now I need a bulb. Any suggestions on a DE 250 bulb???? It isgoing over my frag/stingray tank so I dont want to fry anything out but I also want to see color!!!! I am not sure what to go with. Someone suggested Reeflux 12k. Comments welcomed!!!

Forgive me if I'm off base here but don't you want a lower K value for better growth?

Would it be better to suppliment with a couple T5 bulbs for Attinic blue to maintain better growth?

If for nothing else then my own understanding of lighting and growth relationship.

Will do.. I'll dig through my goody boxes tonight and see what is in there. Have you heard if Tropical Aquarium got a shipment in this week? Hector gave me a Naso tang to take home that wasn't eating. It finally perished. Good thing he was a good businessman and offered it for free and I could pay if it survived. I would like to stop in and pick up some more fish though. Just curious if you knew or not.

Sure, its all in what you are looking for. The multibulb combo would work better.. just more setup cost. I ran two 14K phoenix 250s over my frag tank for 2 years. They worked very well for that purpose of encrusting frags to plugs in a short time. The growth under my XM 10Ks is substantially faster. So, yes your are correct that lower kelvin bulbs do help increase growth rates.

I'm a fan of the 14K phoenix bulb

yup.. probably the best 250w de bulb out...

medic,

I'm using the phoenix 250 DE bulbs on my both of my 90's.
Growth is decent, and no need for T5's or VHO's addons. Colors are great. (no brown corals that should be bright and pastel)
For a $65 to $70 DE bulb it's really not that expensive of an experiment.

With the shallow tank the growth difference that these would lack compared to a 10K may not(?) be as much compared to a 10K with bulb supplimentation.

Ben,

I found the used one I had. You are more than welcome to have it. I kept it as a spare incase I blew one of the newer bulbs. I'm working from home today if you would like to stop out. I may even try and make a lunch time run to tropical aquarium if you want to meet up.
