suggestions for closed loop

I've been thinking about trying to build a closed loop system to replace some of my SEIO pumps. My question is - assuming your tank is not drilled, where do you put the hardware? Do you run a line from the tank down to an external pump and then back up to the tank?

There's more than one way to do it, one example is here:

with instructions here:

http://www.melevsreef.com/how_to_build.html

It uses a SQWD to split the return to two outlets where the flow alternates, but you dont have to use the SQWD, you can just return to a single outlet, or tee the return to multiple outlets, or use a manifold (a loop of PVC around the top of the tank with multiple spouts coming out). Lots of examples in the DIY forum if you search around.

A few things to keep in mind are:

1) Keep the pump as close as possible to the tank to reduce head loss and increase flow. Most people end up plumbing down to a pump on the floor and then back up to the tank, which works fine, but if at all possible (like in the example link) try to place the pump closer to the tank (like on a shelf behind).

2) Make sure you drill anti-siphon holes in the intake tube, and also in the outlet tube if the outlet is below water level. Otherwise if you get a leak in the loop somewhere you will siphon water out of the tank.

3) Probably want to put a union and ball valve on either side of the pump (lacking in the example), if you ever want to remove/replace the pump without disassembling the whole thing.

is this for the 90g reef you're setting up? if its not already set up, why not drill it? I drilled a 2" hole for my CL in the back of my tank and have no complaints whatsoever. It would definitely be a lot more reliable than a siphon. Just my .02

Actually the tank is already set up. Im just lazy when it comes to updating the profile. I was in a hurry to get it up and didnt want to worry about drilling.

If you follow the info on Melv's site think about going from 1/2" to 1" fittings. You can do all this in threaded PVC. If you use 1/2" to 3/4" you need to use slip fittings and glue. The info on Melv's site if VERY helpful, print it off before you go to HD or Loews. Both will carry what you need. I hope this saves you one of the 4 trips to HD that I made to setup my plumbing. Call me if you have any questions. I used Melv's site to setup my plumbing. Good luck.
