Suggestions on drilling a bulkhead for return pump...

I need to drill a hole for my hammerhead return pump and I'm wondering what's the best way to line up the hole for drilling.

Simple way without buying the proper tool is to just cut a square to fit right around the bit as a guide (or circle hole if you have the bit obviously) in a piece of plywood and attach it to the tank with ductape.

I always just start at an angle and walk it upright SLOWLY without any guide.
