Tomorrow I will be upgrading my tank from a 45 to 75... I only have 4 inhabitants in my 45: 2 clowns one watchman goby and a pistol. I also have some snails and hermits. The tank I am getting is keeping the sandbed in it, and the person has only used ro di from the beginning. I want to place my current sand bed in there as well, so that I can have a 4 inch sand bed across the entire tank. How should I go about doing this? Do I need to let any die off occur on the tank that I am purchasing? It will only have a little bit of water when transporting it. Should I expect any ammonia spikes? Like I said his sand will not be mixed up much, but mine will (my tank has only been set up about a month and a half so the sand bed shouldnt be to bad). I am going to keep the inhabitants all in a 10 gallon while transporting and the inverts in another container.

Forgot to mention that I want to have the tank up and running by tomorrow night... with all the fish back in it if possible. I am also using 15 gallons of his water and 40 of my own from my tank and the rest will be newly mixed.

I would recommend that you don't have a 4 inch sand bed in your dt. Keep it at about 2. In my experience it seems that deep sand in the display causes more harm than good. Over time nutrients and sulfur will build up and you will end up removing some of your sand i promise.

I would guess that you'd be fine just adding yours to the new tank on top of his. You might see an ammonia spike, but a good skimmer, and adequate live rock (and sand which you'll have) should take care of that rather quickly. I would probably use as little of his water as possible, as most of any die off would probably be in his water that remained in the tank before you put new/your water in it. Just my two cents.

well you asked
i would put the fish in a rubbermaid brute 20 gal from wally world with a heater and powerhead for a 4 weeks i would not reuse any sand (have seen way to many bad threads about nuking tanks reusing sand)
while your fish are in the holding tank do water changes and use that water to do changes to your new tank

I've reused my sand, mixed it with new sand from a bag, mixed it with excess sand from my roommates tank, when he upgraded his tank and didn't want to scoop it all out, and I've never had any issues with it causing any die off, or losing a single coral or fish. I wouldn't worry about it. But that's just my opinion.

njdevilsfan. Do you think I would have a problem with the fish being acclimated to the water, or just the fact that they will be killed off by an ammonia spike? I do not mind waiting a couple days: a month is over doing it imo... I do not have any delicate fish. I will more than likely drip acclimate everything to the new water since about 15 percent will be different than what the fish are used to.
