So my tanks been running a little over a months now and my first fish purchase was a pair of clowns (of course!). They're a little smaller than an inch and follow each other everywhere. One has done the little ceasing thing to the other but the other never attacked it. Im not sure if they're paired/pairing. If they get separated one will swim frantically until he? finds her? Lol. Anyways my question is they sleep together side by side every night in the same corner of the tank, when would it be appropriate to get an anemone? I don't want to kill it by getting it too soon but they seem like they need a nice place to settle down!

sounds like they are just pairing up and finding out who will be the male and female. no need for a anemone they will settle down just fine. also their is no guarentee they will even go into the anemone.

Most people say to give the tank 6 months to a year before adding any anemone. However, if the tank's parameters are stable, then I think hardier anemones, such as a bubble-tip (BTA) should be fine in a tank that's been up and running for a few months (not just weeks, but months). If you're unsure, give us your parameters for the past few weeks and we can recommend a timeframe.

If you're looking for a true host relationship, let us know what type of clowns you have, and we can recommend the proper pairing. However, in the case of percula clowns, H. magnifica and S. gigantea anemones are probably the hardest anemones to keep in captivity (the acclimation process being the most difficult). The third natural host, H. crispa, tend to be less demanding.

It's also nice to know what else is in your tank (as well as how big the tank is and what kind of lighting you have) and how they are doing. I'm sure you know that clowns don't need anemones to thrive in a tank, and that they'll adopt almost anything as their host (coral, corner of the tank, overflow, etc.). There's no rush to get an anemone, though the clownfish/anemone relationship is what got me back into the hobby, so I know that there will always be an urge to get one.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm going to sleep now, im up waaay past my bed time looking up fishy stuff :P but will post everything requested tomorrow. Thanks again! I don't plan on buying one anytime soon the tank will be a month and a half Friday. I was just curious and I agree that the relationship between the two really is amazing.
