any ideas on skimming the top of your water off? I have a canopy and no glass covering the tank but iI still have crud on the top of the water. Thanks

drop a paper towel onto the water and snatch it right off: generally any floating film will come iwth it.
Beware of people spraying things or painting near your tank: we had an incident with Kilz sprayed 3 rooms away that ended up on the tank...harmlessly, as we got it sponged out as per above immediately, but it was scary.

or you can take a plastic bottle with rod to push it just below the surface water will flow into the bottle.
