I bought a 175w MH Pendant for a 40Gal hex tank. Currently running a 2X65PC. I am thinking of building a canopy for the tank and mounting the light inside if I do this will it generate to much heat and will I have to have a fan? Also how long should I leave the MH running to begin with to acclimate my corals to the light. Thanks

I use a fan on each end. One blowing in and the other blowing out. I'd probably start out with 4 hours a day and gradually increase the period by an hour a week until you get to 10 hours a day.

So you have a pendant already. I recommended a 14K or 20K bulb in another thread of yours.

As for a fan, you can cut a hole on the canopy and mount something like [http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=13921]this[/url] or mount something like this on the back glass pane of the Hex aquarium. You can also get a 4 inch computer fan and mount it on the canopy.

As for acclimating corals to a MH lamp, you can start out with just a few hours of light and increase the duration gradually. You can also use a few (2 to 3) sheets of Teflon type window screen material and remove a sheet every week.

Be prepared to take your time on the lighting acclimation. Just keep an eye on the coral's response to the new light. It doesn't take long to burn them in an upgrade.

Two guys in MTRC ran a similar set up (one with 175W and one with 250W DE's). I don't think they had too many problems with heat, but I'm sure both had a few 4" computer fans or similar. I believe both were open top canopies.

I sent you a reply to your pm but this question is a little different. If you wanted to mount just the MH in the canopy you would ofcourse have plenty of room for that. Like others said just a small computer fan would do the trick as far as heat goes.. Get a 4"/ 120mm PC fan mount it to the back of the canopy and you should be good.
