Sump and Canister question

I got my setup used. We had it in our office and when we went to move my boss sold all the fish back to the store and let me have the tank with rock and equipment. It has a wet/dry with a sump it over flows into with a skimmer and a return line. He also had a renstar canister filter but it wasn't being used. My question is can I use both. I am having issue with water clarity and I feel like sometimes I am not filtering the water enough. Would it hurt anything to run both of them at the same time. if so would it be better to filter the sump or the tank water.

Right now the only thing in the take is a yellow tang, two clowns and 3 green cromies and two mushrooms. I am looking to maybe upgrade the lighting to the Fluval 2.0 and start some coral. I have been stalking this forum for a year and any advice would be great.

Thanks for all the help!

so many other lighting solutions that are about the same price or a hair more but that are better then a FLUVAL. You could go anywhere from reefbreeders, rapidled onyx, kessil, ect...

As for the cannister you would have to constantly clean it as the filter pads inside would quickly become nitrate factories. So yes you could run it but it requires more maintenance.

Are you runing a high quality carbon at all? You would probably be better off to get a reactor to run with some good rox carbon.

I run a cannister with nothing but live rock rubble and have no issues....at all. Easiest "sump" to clean....ever. Of course I have a sump as well.
