Sump and filter question

Quick question. My buddy is currently running a canister filter under his 75. He is now in the process of building a sump and overflow. He wants to run both at the same time. Is this possible to do and if so will it be effective or would one outcompete the other?

You mean input and output of the canister are both in the display? That would be fine. But if you mean from sump to display you probably shouldn't do that.

typically when people upgrade to a sump, they ditch the canister or fill it with live rock, occasionally use it for carbon etc.

they are supposed "nitrate traps"

Yea i agree with everything you said i run a sump as well and i didnt think it was a good idea just because they are nitrate traps and he isnt very diligent in cleaning and tank maintenance. He hasnt cleaned his canister filter or changed the media in six months and heis dt is an algea farm.
