sump and refugium building ideas?

I have a 30 gallon aquarium and a sheet of 1/4" acrylic that i have bought to build a sump and refugium and after researching different ways to put in te baffels i am still confused as to wether i should make it with the return in the middle or all the way to one side. i was thinking having skimmer refug then return but on melves he suggests skimmer return fuge any suggesions.
