sump build

I am planning on changing out my sump which is currently the biowheel sump. I feel the the sump it too small for any equipment for my 75gal. I can only fit my skimmer and return pump. I would like to turn my old 29gal into a sump so that i will have room my skimmer and a gfo/carbon reactor.

My question are - I keep seeing postings/directions for building a sump and people are using glass for the partitions.

would it be possible to just use plexi-glass?
Is there a reason i shouldn't use it?
Would plexi be easier to cut than glass?
If i can use plexi how thick would it need to be?

Keep in mind i'm a chick so i am trying to keep using any power tools to a minimum.

The issue with plexi-glass/acrylic is that when exposed to water it expands. If it doesn't have enough room on the sides it can expand enough to break the glass. Also, silicone doesn't adhere to it so if it isn't thick enough and bends, the baffle separates from the wall of the sump.

I picked up all the glass for my two sumps from a local place that did window repair (houses and cars). It ran me about $40 for the four pieces each time and the edges were sanded so I could handle them without problems.

Good Luck.
