sump for 220g ???

hello,

may i have some advice and or experience concerning a 220g (72x24x30) sump choice? i had the tank and stand delivered today, and my issue is not having a large enough opening for the 48" sump i was planning....

front and back doors / openings are only 30" wide, which means i can fit a 36"x18" footprint.... i was really hoping to use a 48"x 18" sump... i don't want to cut into stand because it will void the warranty....

i will be using a ro 220int skimmer which needs a 16 1/2 x 12 1/2 footprint...

??? does anyone know how much water will usually feedback into the sump from a 220g when the pump turns off? this is a concern, and a major reason i wanted a larger sump...

??? what size sump do you have on a 220g?

options i can think of...

- 50g breeder 36" x 18" x 19", made into sump
- 65g 36" x 18" x 24", made into sump
- custom acrylic sump, but will still have to keep either 36x18 or 30x21 footprint because of doors.

I think the 65 would be optimal. I have the same set up you have except i dont have the overflows. I use a 55 gallon and i have no issues when the power cuts out...

Look at my large reef tank post. Tucson reef tank. I have a 240 tank with same dimensions. Had sump built to fit full size of cabinet. 70"x 19" x 20" awesome!

and it you look at my post, you will see that would not work... the openings are too small for me to fit in anything over 36", hence the reason for the post....

Cutout end of cabinet and slide into stand. To answer your question: if your return is very near the surface of your display tank then the anti siphoning will occur quickly and you won't add that much water to your sump. Maybe only a few to 8 gallons.

I agree about cutting into one end of the cabinet, but if you are still reticent about altering the stand then consider that the sump does not have to be one contiguous vessel.

??? has anyone ever built a sump in place using either glass or acrylic? i would be able to get the 48" pieces into the stand. i would then just need to assemble???

as i stated in the original post.... i am not cutting the stand... it would void the warranty and it is also furniture grade wood. i will not mess it up... it seriously stinks that the stand manufacturer built it so that a 48" sump would not be able to be installed....

dave.m, i thought about a 2 piece sump... i'm looking at possibilities there... any ideas on joining them?

kind of limiting options...

2-3 bulkheads coming out of one vessel going into 2-3 bulkheads on the next vessel (multiple bulkheads provides back-up in case one gets plugged). Locate these as low as you can fit the bulkheads without compromising the bottom seam of the vessels. For extra surety against blockage you can put cages over the inner ends of the bulkheads.

Im thinking of doing this for my 220 gal tank, do you know of any 40 gal breeder tank brands that dont have tempered glass on the sides so I can drill them.

I found the ticket for my situation.... I bought a 125g, taking all the panes of glass apart, cutting 4" off the top all the way around, and re-assembling it inside the stand I will use extra eurobracing and former supports, because I'm not a pro tank builder. Lol

Any advice on building a tank? I've built multiple sumps, but never the outside tank portion. I have done a little research. I will clean the edges with a stone, and use ge silicone... Any tips?

If I ever have to take it out, I'm screwed! Lol

If you're not wanting to cut up a tank to make a custom sump here's Bashsea's idea. Basically 3 separate containers. After having talked with Steve at length while designing my sump, I'd bet he would be more than willing to work something out with you.
