sump help

soon i'll be undergoing the task of switching out tanks, and droping a sump into the new tank...

-i'm cerious to see what your guys' sump setups are...
-what type of pump you recomend for a sump that is going under the stand
-and what tyep of plumbing you have to send the water back into the tank (weather it's just a elbow peice of pvc or a split that pushes water into two differnt directions or any other creative things that can be done)
-also any other tips you have would be greatly apreciated

Wow Alf, thats high tech :). Makes mine look like chump change compared...

Brandon, how big is your new tank? 90? 120? bigger?

Oh, I thought you were upgrading from the 75g :). How much room is under the tank, and have you given thought to what kinds of filtration you want in your sump? skimmer? dsb? refugium? carbon/chemical? UV? Ozone? And, what are you using for overflow? Drilled? Durso? Weir? Overflow box? etc?

For my .02 I'd recomend the following:

~ Figure out what size PVC you'd like to use for drains and return and then go a size bigger. I picked "the right size" and now it's too small.

~ Dont over fill your stand. I built a custom sump that takes up most of the space under my tank for maxium function and water volume. The problem is now I can't fit any other equipment in there.

~ Plan, look and plan some more. A thread like this can get you some good information.

I am using dual 1" PVC for the drains (wish I had used 1.5"). The retun is 1.5". I am using a Mag 12 in sump for the return. This was because I got it new for $50 with free shipping and most of the year in the Northeast, free heat to the tank is good. All plumbing is hard PVC. I used street elbows (curved) on the returns.

I dont have any pictures, but can get some if you are interested.

Mike, you're going to give me a big head and with the lack of hair on it, it's going to look BIGGER!. I only show the good parts, all the mistakes are hidden on the other side, where I stand during the presentation, to block your view. AND when your eyes wander in that direction, I point to a random coral and make up a distracting story. :D

Working on pictures now.

Heres my diy setup. Mag 5 return. Sump is a 20H with acrylic baffles siliconed in. The return area is only 3 1/2 gallons, any more would overflow the tank if the siphon failed. I need to get a auto topoff soon.

As requested, here are some pictures and descriptions.

Project 120 This details the build process of my current display tank.

Equipment Setup Pictures and descriptions from today. Hopefully this has something good for anyone looking to add a Sump to their system.

When I started Project 120 about 1 year ago, I spent a TON of time in the DIY forum reading and getting ideas.

bdamon, I see you have one of those contraptions that hangs over the side of the sump... Jamie included one for me with the 125 setup I just got from her. Is that some sort of media holding cup resting in it? Where can I get one? I hadn't really figured out just yet how to use the "hangy thing" for media... real technical, I know. :p

It is a Berlin hang on filter sock holder. The cup your seeing is just the plastic ring of the filter sock. I got it from Marine Depot. It works ok for me in the space I have. I have to change/clean the sock about every 4-5 days. I also throw a bag of carbon in the sock.
