i got a sump light with a 75 watt bulb from home depot .its a haligon used for plants. its cliped onto the center brace of the stand. Well while haveing the light on i was moving equipment aroung and the light touched the side of my 29 gallon sum and mealted the plastic edge. i am very conserned about the heat not only because of melting/ fire but also for being very close to the bottom of my tank. what should i do?

Try one of the compact fluorescent lights. They put out close to the same light and not nearly as hot. They look identical to the flood lamps but have a cf bulb inside the housing

thanks for the fast response now does anyone know how to put a life reef over flow together? grr i wish there were instructions for this stuff

I think they can order it for you at HomeDepot. I get mine from mail order and buy 4 at a time for my tanks and save on shipping......

great article--after reading it i went to the specialty lighting store (they stock them--not a special order) and they work just as melev says

I bougth mine at HD and it carries 1 than is 18W or 16W spiral reflector @ 6500K color temp I have 2 of those on my cheato and grows really good.

i'm also nervouse about my life reef over flow reading on melves if the siphon breaks my tank will flood is there any way to prevent this?

you ment if the shipond DON´T break. you need to do some holes in the return PCV (or anithing you use) at the level of the water than you need to break. make 1/4" holes oposite direction (2 if you can if one get stuck by algae or snail)

That way the siphon will break when the level down to that point.

aaron7405 i was there and i bought a red one at23 watts=90 watts at 1000 lumens. is this the same brand your talking about?

no i mean if the return pump ifs still running and the siphon in the overflow breaks the the return pump will still be draining the sump and non of it will be falling into the tank again. Also my skimmer is not in the sump it is plumbed outside connected with tubes. do i have to put water in the skimmer when i turn everything on?

aaron is it the n:vission? i also got that but haven't tried it yet. how hot does it run?

The bulb you want is the (16 Watt R30 Daylight(781-790 ). It will have a blue package.

The Green and Red have lower K ratings. (The K rating is in small print on the back of the package)

Here is a link to the bulb. If you refer to the test on (melvreef) it shows the results of growth between a lower and higher K rating.

This bulb is also slightly smaller than the other "Floodlight" type bulbs so it takes up a little less space under the cabinet.

I buy them from HD and I use a $5 outdoor landscape fixture. The landscape fixture has a rubber boot that the bulb screws into. When the bulb is screwed in the "connection" area is fully protected from the elements...(aka salt creep). I cut most of the steak part off, and installed a spring clip (used to hold mops and brooms) under the stand...Whats left of the steak part of the fixture clips right into the installed clip holder.
