Sump or no Sump?

I have a 28 gallon and can have a steve drill the tank no problem

Do you think its worth doing a sump if i can only put a 5.5 gallon under the stand?

basically would just be a tiny little fuge and a return

just wondered if there is that much added value in a sump so small.

or would not drilling and doing water changes be as effective?

I think so... Well, my theory is... and maybe it just might be me, but the added volume of water kind of helps with maintaining parameters...granted it's not a whole lot.

I find having sump make changing water so much easier... just pump the water into the sump and pump the water into the sump. Instead of lifting the bucket and adding it to the display...that's if you had to.

yeah tough choice i was definetly leaning towards a sump. thinking having a fuge to grow cheato would defintely be a benefit!

You might consider one of the hang-on-back refugiums, I have one on a 29g, and found it to be surprisingly helpful. It also eliminates the need for a return pump etc.. Mine is an aquafuge.. not the one with the skimmer, but is supplied by a mj-400, works well, is unobtrusive, simple and not likely to cause any overflows.

For what it's worth

Anything is better then nothing. I would do the sump as well as the hang on back refuge as said could be a very good idea.

"cpr aquafuge hang-on-back refugiums"

i got one (small - 13.5L x 4.5W x 11.5H) for $70. all you will need is a pump and fuge light.

If you can have your tank drilled then a sump is the better choice (IMHO). The added water volume will help with stablility of water parameters and there are the other advantages already mentioned. You may be able to get other items out of the display and create a cleaner look....if that is important to you. I do not know what your setup looks like. Best of luck in whatever you decide

kdblove- whatever you choose whether it's a HOB filter or sump, you really can't go wrong. I just see it as an add bonus.

My old roommate norcal99 took and an aquaclear hob filter and modded it to be a fuge. It worked great. You can probably find the link for the DIY on nano-reef. It's a pretty easy mod.

My vote is for the sump.

Heck, you can even do both! have the hob on the sump. Hope that helps.

Go with a sump. I really wish i could of had one. In my case i had to settle for an internal overflow/sump of only a gallon. There is no place for my to have a sump unless i felt like opening the wall the tank is on and since i don't own this house i had to settle. It will make life easier in the long run for you.
