Sump question

Ok how does the live rock equation work with a sump?
Do I get enough rock for total gal including sump or only go by tank size?

rule of thumb is 1 to 2 lbs per gal of tank.
at 2 lbs, you'll probably start running out of room in the tank.
I personally don't know anyone who puts rock in sump.
A refugium w/ mud or sand and some macro algae would be better IMO

the benefit is that you can keep a high amount of live rock ratio but have more room in your display by keeping some of it in your sump. its a good idea. the fliter benefits are still there but you dont have it taking up all that space!

My sump is a 55g tank. 1/3 of it is refugium. The refugium is filled about 1/2 way with live rock. The top half is macro algae. I find that the pods and worms really appreciate the rock. The rocks that I have in there vary in size from an inch or two to soft ball size. I also use the rocks when I need something to mount a frag to.

Bottom line: Rocks in the sump are not nessisary, but can be useful.
