sump question

I got a great deal on a brand new 75 gallon RR setup. The only downside is the sump it cam with was the Megaflow Model 1 sump. Its kind of small and is rated for tanks up to 55 gallons. Do you guys think I should keep it, or sell it and go for another option. It is still brand new in the box.

I was just making sure it was going to be big enough. I don't want to have to upgrade further down the line. This is my first sump. My previous 55 gallon had a HOB fuge.

How many compartments does it have?

I put a sump under my tank after it was already up and running. To do it I divided it into 2 parts. The first tank is a 20G tall that has the skimmer portion and the return section (separated by baffles) and the second tank sits up on blocks so it is higher and can drain into the first. The second tank holds an additional 5-6 gallons for chaeto and some live rock rubble.

IMO you should use the biggest sump/refugium you can fit under the stand. I would attempt to work with what you have and make it bigger rather than scrapping it and buying a new one.

Don't have to do it right now, but I think you would be better off making your owns sump/fuge. I used a 30 gallon sump/fuge for my 75. It seems difficult at first, but it was very easy to make. Excluding letting the silicone dry and extra trips to Home Depot (( helpful hit, make a list of the PVC parts and sizes that you need BEFORE you go there. ;) )) it took me less then an hour to make.

I'm going to make my own now. I rather do it now while the tank is still empty than want to do it later. Anybody wanna buy a brand new megaflow sump thats still brand new in a box??? lol

good choice. you would end up changing it out so best to do it right to start with, and sell it NIB

Ton,

What size sump are you going with. I am in the process of building my first 75 as well and first sump. Good luck with it.

cadams2 ---- while I am not Ton702, I used a 30 gallon sump for my 75. Been running for about 6 years now, and I am very happy with it.

Here it is right when I finished it (( I used an external pump, but didn't drill the sump ))

And a fairly current shot,
