Sump questions

I am planning on putting a 10g under my 55 to use as a sump. I will be using a mag9 for my return and a Red Sea Berlin Turbo Classic driven by a mag7. The issue is the 2 pumps and skimmer take up most of the space in the 10g.

Is it ok if I just put a few small pieces of rock and a strawberry basket filled with macro in there? I am working under the idea that something is better than nothing.

The other idea I had invovled someone drilling the tank for me. So, if someone would be willing to drill a small hole in the tank let me know. It cost $8 bucks so I wouldn't be concerned if it breaks, it could even be practice before you try it on yours.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A mag 9 in a 10g?!?!? :eek1: That's 90x the volume flow in that tank. Your sump will resemble a very powerful toilet flushing constantly, and while that will cause enough bubbles by itself, having a skimmer in there too you will have bubble paradise.

Unless he has it going a fair ammount of vertical head feet (at 10 feet, it should have 300 gph going, according to the instant head loss calculator). Even then, I might consider downsizing a little.

My main use of the sump will be to get water to my skimmer. I would add top-off and drip my kalk into it as well. I'm not planning on setting up a refugium in it, that's why I was asking about just tossing some rubble and macro in for the hell of it.

With my return plumbing as I have it, it would be 530gph but I have one line that dumps some water back into the sump which should get me down to ~400gph.

After thinking about it, my preference is to get it drilled to move the skimmer out of the sump altogether.
