Sump/Refugium question

So I have been reading about sumps and how they work. (Never had one believe it or not) I would like to have one because of its benefits. What I dont understand is what would happen if the power fails and the return pump shuts down. The gravity would keep the water flowing into the sump, correct? How do you keep the sump from overflowing and flooding your house? Is there some way to cut off the flow?
Thanks,
Copper

The key is to make sure that you have enough room in your sump to handle the amount of water that siphons down from the display. I would avoid any check valves since that is just another item that can fail. I make sure that my returns to the display stay pretty high up TP reduce the siphon amount. Also drilling a small hole in the return line near the bulkhead can help break the siphon.
