Sump vs Refugium

a refugium would be in your sump. a sump is the tank under your DT that houses your skimmer, heater, fuge, reactors and etc. makes your life much easier.

as stated above, a refugium can be in your sump, or you can have a seperate refugium and seperate sump. So a refugium and a sump are 2 different things and you do not need either one, but both can be beneficial.

They are 2 different things, but you can have your sump set up to include a sump area in it. As I am new to the hobby take my opinion as just that and I am sure others will pipe in to corect me any where i may be wrong but here it goes.

A sump is a container of one sort or other usualy a tank that can be divided into multiple sections as needed. Sumps are used to add total water volume and to house equipment not wanted in the display, heaters and such. also many people chose to have there protein skimmer in the sump although some run them inline.
this is also a good place to add things to your tank, make up water, meds ect..., the sump is also all evaporation will show so your display will remain the same.

A fuge is different but can be included in a section of the sump. Fuge's are generally used for nutrient export by growing macro algae, deep sand bed. Fuge's are also used to grow pods and add biodiversity to your tank.

This by all means not complete discriptions but a brief discription of each and to answer your question niether is a have to have but both are very benificial part of a complete system.

agin i am a newbie with no real life expierence just 10 months of reading and planning my own tank and i am sure people will pipe in with better replies and corect me where i am wrong.

Am I going to have an overflow concern using a sump? What are the proper precautions to take?

I'm going to set up a 10 gal for my 75gal DT.

A 10 gallon should work just fine for ya.Depending on what size overflows you have definatly just pipe in some ball valves to throttle the water flow down to the sump. Then you can match it to your return pump. Good luck!
