Sump?

To expand water volume and as a place to put unsightly equipment you don't want in your main tank; such as skimmers, heaters, temperature, pH, ORP, probes, carbon filters, water top off, Calcium Reactor's, etc. etc. etc.
 
I agree with SeanT, the extra water volume adds more stability to your tank allowing for more stable parameters etc. and keeps unsightly equipment out your display.

Also by including a refugium into your sump you can have great natural nitrate reduction by means of a deep sand bed and/or growing macro algae.
