i have a 46 gallon tank now with about 140 pound live rock running for about 4 month love it i have been running a caister filter and skimmer but what to upgrade to a sump now plus it will hide all the ugly stuff but my real question is if i hook up a sump now all i need is some live sand and rock that will be my filter.do i still need to run the canister filter.thanks for the help jeremy

Wow, that's a lot of LR for a 46. Is yours a bowfront?

If you have a skimmer and that much live rock you won't need the canister. You can use it to run carbon though and polish the water, so I wouldn't get rid of it.

Does the stand look like this from the back?

What you see under it is a 10g sump. Sadly, I could not make a fuge fit in there. My priority was having the skimmer and heater in it, so that's all that's there. And the return pump, of course.

yes it does i can fit some thing 35 inches long and no biiger than 12 inches wide there but the real question is does the sump take over for the canister filter thanks for your help

With that much live rock in your tank and a skimmer you will not need the canister filter. The live rock will be your bio filter and the skimmer will act as your mechanical filter. You can hang on to the canister though if you want to run carbon or something like that to use as a chemical filter. I don't have one and don't plan to use one.

For me, the sump really just gets all the equipment out of view and under the stand. There's more room in the tank for fish and rock.

thank you for all the help jeremy i have been trying to answer that question for about a week very new to this .this is a great site thanks again

im loving that...my tank is pretty much the same as yours except i have 95 lbs of live rock, live sand, and a hob sump with chaeto algae inside. so far i haven't had any major problems, but if i could do it all again id probably put a sump underneath the tank like everyone else
