Sun Burned Aptasia...

Red Sea Purple Tang

I have some rocks in a holding tank that have some aptasia's on it. I don't want to have to Juice the rock, neither do I want the rock in the display tank.

So....what if I toss the rocks in outside in the sun and let them dry out. There will be some "sun burned" aptasias on the rocks still. Once the rock is introduced back to saltwater, will the aptasia remnants, somehow, come back to life? I wouldn't think, but stranger things have happened in this hobby.

:eek2:

The aptasia will die. The only drawback is that everything else that dies on and in the rock, will then proceed to disintegrate back into "nutrients" when you place it back in the tank.

As long as it is only one rock, and your filtering capabilities on the system can handle it, it should be OK. A better way may be to take the rock out, scrub it real good to get rid of the aptasia, rinse it off, place some superglue in the hole/spot where the aptasia was, and then place it back into the tank. Less die-off that way.

Back in the old days, I used to bleach my rock in clorox bleach every 6 months to make them sparkling white again. THen either let it dry in the sun for a few days or soak in tubs of water for a few days for the bleach to get removed, and then placed it back into the tank. THe bleach seems to actually dissolve the organics and removes them from the rock.

The title of your post got me thinking....

How long before someone markets a aptasia removal laser?
