Sun coral feedings......

So what all does everyone feed their sun corals? I bought a starved one from the LFS and have been feeding mysis everyday for a week. They are responding very well, opening with extension within less than 5 minutes of food hitting them. I've been using the bottle method(cut out bottom and place over them). I was just wondering what other types of food I could mix in with the mysis to give them some variety(since variety is the spice of life ;) )

Thanks for the help!

I've had my sun coral rock for 2.5 years now and I started it the exact same way, with mysis. They don't seem picky about the brand or size really as long as they can swallow it! In the beginning I fed it every day to get the meatiness back on it but now that it is healthy I only feed it twice to three times a month. I don't get many new polyps so if you want to have a lot of growth you should definitely continue to feed every day (or as close to that as you can!)

I feed mine frozen mysis, brine, blood worms and even small pieces of krill and silversides. They're definitely not picky and after a silverside feeding they open up HUGE!

I just purchased a sun coral rock, they open up when my lights go off. I have this long sqirt and it cut pieces of shrimp and move it over them, the polyps open up and grab the shrimp and eat it. They can eat some big pieces for their size.

can you train the sun coral to open up during the day instead of the night? i have experience with dendros where they are now opening up during the day and during my feeding time...

Yes, same concept as Dendrophyllia sp.

I feed Mysis:

I feed theme with Brine Shrimp and Formula One and some times with raw shrimp.... like 4 times a week....=]

i feed mine with the bottle method too. and like you i got them from my lfs for free because he had them for over a month and said that they were in bad shape and told me if i could get them to come back to just keep them. the very first night i put the bottle over them squirted in some juice and 10 minutes later they opened up and i fed them.

that was a year ago now i have them trained to open during the day the open up at the same time every day +- 15 minutes. and i only target feed them 2 times a week. the rest of the time they eat what ever they can catch floating by when i feed all the fish and corals everyday. i have had good growth out of them with lots of babys popping up. i feed mine mysis, brine, frozen krill, plankton, cyclops, pellets, what ever i am feeding my fish that day is what they get. hope this helps

I feed all my LPS, photosynthetic or not, every other day. Even my hammer gets a light dusting of brine occasionally, despite the fact it rarely eats.

For a while i was feeding the sun coral daily, but once the coral recovered what i thought to be enough, i cut back feedings to every other day. Better for my water parameters that way.

I am still getting pretty insane growth overall though, one of my colonies has easily doubled in size in the last two months.

As for food varieties, I feed mysis or brine on rotation; that is enriched with Selcon/Zoe/Zoecon or another vitamin suppliment once weekly. I've tried feeding other frozen foods from one of those variety packs, but most of the foods seem to come in a gel cube which is a royal pain to hack up small enough for the coral.

Oh, and once per week i feed frozen cyclops for my filter feeders. , bayb sun coral polyps love it.

I feed mine frozen brine in a gel cube. its not hard at all to get small enough, I just thaw it in some tank water and mix it up with a baster it comes apart into tiny pieces. I got my colony for free also from a friend that didn't like the idea of target feeding a bottom dwelling coral a few times / week. It was in rough shape and there was a lot of dead skeleton showing, but now there thriving and I have little ones popping up all over the rock they came on.

I have been thinking about attaching the top half of a 2 liter soda bottle to a 1" clear flex tubing so I can feed my sun polyps without getting my entire arm wet, has anyone tried anything similar?

There is a feeder called "Sea Squirt" that is an extendable turkey baster, basically. You may need to enlarge the hole a little with a small drill bit to get larger food pieces thru it. I habe been using mine for several years and my arm is still dry.

to row sun coral quiker to frag them can i keep them in the dark at all time and grow faster or be healthier? mines arent looking to good and want it to grow back.
