Sun Coral question

Do I have to keep the Sun Coral shaded? I know it is non-photosynthetic but does keeping it in full light hurt it? I know it prefers caves because of the way it feeds but in the aquaria it is hand feed.

Thanks

They are much happier in lower light, but keeping it in full light is ok.

I have noticed though, with my sun coral, (under nova extreme pro) it is somewhat bleached, and the polyps facing towards it are less orange than the polyps shaded from the light.

I keep mine right out in the open so I can see it. It would be a shame to hide such color in a cave. It eats with no problem, opens up every night and is growing nicely.

I keep mine in the open for the same reason Tennyson does. Like clock work opens every evening, eats well and is growing. Probably 9 months old. Lighting is 150w MH.

Has been under the halides and doing great. Even coming out during the day for feeding with the rest.

WOW, thats a nice piece. Well it's good to hear that, they're ok in the light but prefer the darkness. But thats fine.

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and a little late to the thread, but I'll post anyways.

When I bought my first sun coral, I built it an awesome cave in my live rock to shiled it from my lights. Some people think this is critical since sun corals aren't found in direct light in the ocean. I, however, soon discovered that this coral's feeding schedule and requirements make the cave idea irrelavant. I wasn't feeding it enough because it was inconvenient. I decided to feed it more and worry about light less and my sun coral thrived (past tense because I gave it away).

I had put it front and center under direct light and it eventually got to where it stayed open for about four hours a day.
