sun corals

I have always liked sun corals, not crazy about spot feeding. My question is this.Does anyone have sun corals that thrive without spot feeding.I feed my corals 3 times a week lights out with cyclopeeze and hikari coral gumbo and was curious if anyone owning these beautiful corals had success with only feeding the tank as a whole,no spot feeding.Thanks.

If you do not want to spot feed , then do not get a Sun Coral. They need to be fed at least 3X week by shutting off the flow in the tank, spot feeding and then making sure other critters do not steal the food. They are not for you.

It's really not that hard to spot feed them. Once they get strong they grab the food easily if you squirt it anywhere near them. I have seen a few posters claim theirs were happy just from broadcasting the tank, but when they posted pics their corals were not what I'd call successful honestly. So I guess you can keep them alive maybe but with a little effort of just squirting food at them you can have a beautiful coral.

I got mine in a random frag pack and thought it would die for sure but it's quiet happy now and one of my faves. Since I'm feeding it anyway I've started targeting my Duncan, bubble, and a few other corals and they responded really well. I think it's better for the tank that way than broadcasting a lot of nutrients in and hoping they feed coral but not algae. Jmho

I spot feed twice a week, and my 2 suns (yellow and black) are super happy, extend their polyps every night, and have actually made a few babies.

I've also gone to spot feeding my fungia, duncan, acans, and open brain. All have responded very well to being fed. They color up nice, grow way faster then when I didn't, and are wide open with feeder tentacles out every night after lights out.

If you don't want to spot feed a sun coral, don't get one. It will starve to death and eventually die. Broadcast feeding doesn't work either as they can not compete for food. What I like to do is broadcast a bit to keep the fish occupied, then spot feed with my pumps off.

Basically if your already broadcasting, its only a little bit of extra time to spot feed. I have a small squirt bottle with a piece of airline attached to the end. Works great and I don't have to get wet.

Don't get upset.I didn't get in this hobby to kill corals, and I wouldn't be asking if I didn't give a damn.I have had these corals in previous tanks, and I spot fed,and they did well and multiplied, but didn't know if that was the only way to do it or not.
