Sun Polyp...

I purchased two sun polyp frags yesterday for the first time but, they still haven't opened up. I never saw them opened because when I got to the farm they were already packed for me. They are still an orange yellow coloy. Does anyone know if something could be wrong??? Thank you very much for any help.

Give em a few days. They are most likely stressed from the move and because of this, some corals can take up to a week to open up. I'm sure they are fine. Post some pics or let us know when they come out from hiding in their happy place :)

I agree with Fat Surgeon, it could take some day even 1-2 weeks to open...

I think mods will move this post to LPS forum...

Good luck!!

Thank you very much, especially for the speedy response. I also will post a whole bunch of pix as soon as it opens. How about feeding the Sun Polyp?

Glad you asked that question. Because SunPolyps lack zooxanthellae, they need to be feed meaty foods like brine, mysis, plankton, etc. I would feed them everyday if possible, and not less thasn every other day. Either target feed or put them in an area where there is plenty of flow so they can capture it on their own. BTW, the more flow they get, the better off they will be. Low light areas seem to be the best for them as well. Hope this helps.

You put the URL between the two
tags and it'll post the picture.

VERY nice sun don. If i could give you a few suggestions.
1) in my experience and research, low lighting is a myth. No matter where they are placed they will thrive if fed meaty food enough.
2)take it off the rocks and place it on the sand so you can feed with the "cup" method. A sun with that many heads is going to be VERY hard to feed each one individually. Much easier to put a "cup" over it and shoot as much food in as you want without fouling your water.
3)to get it to open try putting the cup over it and squirting a little frozen cyclopeeze soaked in selcon or zoecon mixed with a few ml's of tank water. Try it a few times each day. By the 2nd or 3rd day it should fully open. It needs to eat right away. Waiting 1-2 weeks for it to open is IMO why so many do bad in our homes.

Start feeding right away and keep us posted, that is a great piece!

Your welcome, glad I could help! Those are 2 very nice pieces! I definitely think they are the most beautiful coral in the hobby. It's too bad they have started to get a bad rap as difficult or hard to keep alive. With proper feeding and a little TLC, i think they can be very hardy. Would be nice to see them become more common.

I have no problem with mine .I feed them mysis, brine etc every other day with a turkey baster and on the days I don't spot feed them they catch flake food I drop in the tank. I have to agree they are a very nice colorful addition.
good luck with them.
