Sun Polyps..Anyone familiar

Just had a reef friend give me one of these. He just bought it and it didn't open up for a few days and decided to give up on it. It's a cool little polyp. It's yellow hard out sheels make for an interestign display alone. If we can ever get the polyps to extract I'm sure it'll be very pretty. It's been in the tank for about 24 hours with nothing happening. I see the little red eye in the center of the yellow holes thinking about extending but nothing yet. I put them on the shady part of the tank reading that they require dim lightning. Any ideas?

You are correct that they do not require light. Try tempting it to feed with brine shrimp soaked in selcon. Each polyp must eat to survive, unlike other corals.

Yeah, they need to be spot fed and depending on who you ask they can be difficult to keep. So make sure you are spot feeding it.

I do not think that the lighting is as much as issue with Sun Polyps as the correct feeding.

You would want to target feed them with Cyclopeeze or something similar. If you have a lot of food stealers try making a shield (I've used a soda bottle with both ends cut off, slip it over the Sun and feed thru the top. After they start comming out you can also feed with Mysis
Feed about the same time every day. Hopefully they will start to come out.
I have a bunch of small single polyps all over my tank now.

WE have 2 sunpolyps in one of our 75 gallon tanks. one orange/yellow and a black one. When we put a little cyclopeeze in the tank the polyps come out awsome. We have never spot fed them.

give them plenty of shade and target feed each polyp with a mixture of brine and cyclop-eze. i mix the cyclopeze and brine in a cup of tank water and squirt them with a turkey baster. good luck and they'll do fine as long as you have the patience to feed them and dont forget. good luck with them.
