superman

ive got a superman frag that ive had for a few months now. since ive had it, it continually keeps slowly loosing its color and now looks like a peach base with light orange polyps. ive done full param checks of sg, calcium, alk, mag, temp,ph,trites, trates, ammonia, and phosphates and nothing is out of acceptable range. so i can only assume that its flow or lights. its getting moderate indirect flow from a tunze and has good PE so i dont think its flow as much as i think lights. im running 2 250w 20k's on Eballasts. the superman is exactly 21 inches from the light and is not shaded at all. so my question is, what should i do? should i move it up top? or just up a few more inches? i wouldnt think superman would require to much lighting but i obviously dont know something. any help is appreciated. TIA!

Is it the Danae or encrusting or digi? There have been a couple of different kinds out and they ,ime, need different lighting. This one is the encrusting

And this is the Danae.

I've got mine under 400 watt Iwasakis about 20 inches under the water. I've had it up much higher and didn't have any problems there either.

Sounds to me like yours is bleaching, which I have seen exactly what you are talking about happen with the supermans under 20Ks. If it is light related I'd see about moving it up a bit and see how it goes.

I would say it's not getting enough light. Some acro's and monti's do just fine under 250's that far down.

I would say you got a recent import wild colony. I've seen a few of those come in, even had someone trade me as an original superman... they never seem to hold their color & look exactly how you described. Sorry man, hope you did not pay alot for it.

Jovana, even the expensive designer frags can bleach, brown up, or lighten up.

They can but not as likely as the wild colonies coming in. Under the not so ideal condition most SPS will brown out.

Yup I agree.... but alot less likly, all the supermans from reliable sorces that I've seen keep their color under high or low light... all the new wild imports do exactly what this guy is describing. come in nice...within a month or so start to tan out & the polyps become peachy orange.

Have you given thought to the possibility that they are the same, and that this is just a side effect of everyone who has problems with the coral saying "it must not be the real one"

IE rather than saying "I have a problem in my tank" or saying " I might have it in the wrong spot" they say "it must not be the real superman"

Nope... I got a frag of tubbs after I got the wild one (that was faded when I got it) and for about 6 months now the tubbs grows great and just simply glows... the wild import sat right next to it forever & did not grow at all or color up. I knocked it off the rock and into a hole a few months back though & never bothered to retrieve the brown frag...so no compairison pics.

Jovreefer, I believe the one that my friend had turn white/orange was from a wild as well (the one I mentioned earlier under the 20Ks); I am almost certain it wasn't from the 'true' SM. I've traded/sold a lot of frags of mine, which is from the brudah/tubs/azndragonx colony, and have never had a problem with it.

its encrusting. its not danae. i cant understand why all params are fine, and i even have acros and other monty's in the same tank and they are thriving, but this is just fading away.
well anyways i just moved it up about 5 inches higher so hopefully that will produce some results. thanks for everyone's help so far.

I have my encrusting (first pic) low in my 90g with my MH 14" above the water! The Danae likes more light than the encrusting ime.

Btw I have never seen the "cap" superman and have had and sold all three of the others for some time now. If someone does see it please let me know!!
Thanks
